Zx9R F2. Bought new, got written off by a run away car when six months old, then turned into something far more interesting. Been all round Europe on this old girl, unassuming, comfortable, still bloody fast. Underated. Very Happy

350lc/YPVS race bike, built from a pile of bits and a rolling chassis that had been in a shed for twenty years

Started off like this:

TZR250 2MA, my original race bike in it's new clothing

Started out like this, only the forks and wheels survive from the original bike!

Unfortunatly i didn't take many, it was a mad rush to get it ready for the begining of the season Rolling Eyes

But this is how i got the rolling chassis, it had been crashed at Lydden in the 80's then left in the back of a garage

https://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff98/Higgsy_photo/Hybrid/DSC00071.jpg

https://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff98/Higgsy_photo/Hybrid/DSC00073.jpg

Just about got it in one peice with borrowed pipes and unfinshed tank for the YPM stand at the Ally Pally show

https://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff98/Higgsy_photo/Hybrid/DSCF0069.jpg

Managed to blow the engine up at Oulton, so i bolted in the motor I'd bought from a fellow racer that morning and went out on it, I'd bought the engine knowing it was tired and needed a rebuild, still did ok but it was seriously down on power.

Rebuilt the original engine and at Brands GP it all came together and I got the first LC in the top ten for quite a few years

https://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff98/Higgsy_photo/Brands%20GP/28707_118022198236813_1025181297872.jpg

It's been through quite a few changes since the original build, the engine is now Bob Farnham tuned and fully sorted, and two seasons of racing have taken it's toll on the cosmetics.

Pat Herron, who can ride a bit Shocked , got a second on it in the Paul Hogan memorial race, which cheered me up no end!

This is what happens when you rev a powervalve engine to over 11000 rpm!

I've got a YPVS as well that's under construction atm.

It's a combination of the swingarm and the swingarm frame pivot that induces the most flex on the LC, I can't brace the frame under the regulations but I can change or brace the swingarm

We ran some rudimentary stress tests and came to the conclustion that the stiffer aftermarket swingarms would transfer the stresses to the swingarm piviot and onwards to the frame. So hence the bracing between the rear swingarm triangle. It was an attemp to equalise the flex a bit more. The standard unbraced swingarm is very weak and you can bend it with your hands!

I really wanted to build and race an lc, having felt I missed out back in the day, putting the YPVS engine in was an attempt at easier power and more reliability. I ran a standard engine for the first season, managed to get it near the power limit of 59hp on the Bemsee dyno with just carbs and pipes

Thanks Very Happy Most people seem to like it

This is the current project:

F2 powervalve, Bob Farnham motor, RGV250 seat, no fairing.

Just got a long list to sort out inc. wiring, pipes, carbs, clocks, radiator, rearsets etc.

https://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff98/Higgsy_photo/14-01-12_1211.jpg

Instead of racing my self this season I'm going into team management.(means I can have a beer or five on Saturday night now Laughing )

This is Doug Edmondoson at the Boxing day Plumb pudding race at mallory on my TZR, he'll be riding the bike this season and hopefully making a big dent in the Clubman Cup championship

The motor in there at the moment:

Bob Farnham 'Sean Emmett' tune on 31K Barrells, stock F2 bottom end, crank has TZ flat cage bearings, Bob's one piece reeds in stock cages, XS750 clutch with three TZ750 springs

Martin Johnson Hydroformed pipes with DTR TZ end cans

Keihin PWK28 (ex KR1s) Carbs

Stock F2 stator, shaved rotor and F1 CDi, stock F2 powervalve controller

It would make a lot more than out 59hp ceiling if we did some exhaust port work, but the idea was to get it to drive out of corners. Works very well Cool The engine is about as much as the chassis can cope with realistically

I agree, the powervalve is a bit of an ugly and heavy beast, the LC is much prettier Very Happy

RD400 Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I've got one of those as well! Stan Stephens fast road tuned, 420cc on Allspeeds. Far too much engine for the chassis without a doubt Shocked

That's on the project list for this year, haven't ridden it for at least 8 years Crying or Very sad

Back to the LC engine, it's all about drivability, although it's a race engine it would make a hell of a road bike! It will pull from 5000 then gets a real shove on over 9000. The hp figures don't really tell the story of how it goes. You can easily over port two strokes, the pipes and carburation is more important to how the bike performs and drivability more desirable than peaky top end power IMO

Cheers for the comments Very Happy

Actually I agree, the N1 is bloody lovely, a m8's restoring one at the moment, booked my ride on it already Cool

LC2 had one of those back in the 80's loved it, probably the prettiest of the 31K's IMO But if I had one for the road I'd actually want an F1, I know it's not the prettiest but there is something about them . . . .

But the F2, nah, I like the N2 so that's why there isn't going to be a fairing, anyway have you felt the weight of an F2 fairing? Shocked

None of them are as pretty as the LC though Razz

Ah, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder m8, just as it should be. I've got a m8 who's mad about GT380's for some reason, I think they were bloody awful back in the day and probably still are, but he's convinced they are the dogs nuts. He's got four of them Shocked Each to their own as you say Very Happy

Unfortunatly not m8, lost all the last rebuild pics when my old pc hard drive died Crying or Very sad

It's a 400D on an S plate, I'm the third owner, matching numbers, guiglario seat, tomaselli headlight mounts, LC front guard, cut down rear, Allspeeds, rear sets, Micron brace, I've owned it since 1989 after buying it off a m8. Did have Dream Machine paint, but that needs doing again now and the stickers were wrong anyway Rolling Eyes It's proper old skool and it's going to be staying that way!

I will be rebuilding it after I've sorted some bits out, but it won't be until later in the year, too much to do, too little time Mad

Sorry i would have credited you for that pic, someone sent it to me, it's one of my favorite pics of the LC Cool

That was the first top ten for an LC for many a year in the YPM's, that was my goal when i built it, I've never ridden so hard as I did in that race, just wanted to prove the bike could do it Very Happy

So cheers for taking the pic, it makes me smile every time I look at it Thumbs Up
