Hi guys! Not been on here in a long time! Long story short, I bought a Yamaha YZF R125 in 2010 and have loved every minute of it, not craving any more power and enjoying what it can offer.

That is until I bought a CAR, a Ford Puma, and now that's my fun vehicle. It shouldn't be like that. I want my bike to be a fun vehicle, so now my R125 is sitting there and I've been offered £2000 for it at the local Yamaha dealer (wasn't even expecting this because it's got some fairing damage).

So, if I sell it I'll have £2000 - £2500 to spend on a decent third bike. I really wanted to get an R6, but I need a more forgiving bike. On the other hand, I wanted a Ninja 250, but I don't know if it would have the fun factor attributed to the acceleration like my Ford Puma gives.

So here's my dilemma.. I want something nippy, but also safe and forgiving. It doesn't have to be supersports, just sporty, but I want something that has the same acceleration (if not a little bit more) than my car.

I have been sensible with the 125cc motorcycle and now I want the next step up. So here I am trying to be sensible and taking all genuine advice on the subject on-board.

R6 and CBR 600 look gorgeous, but from what I've heard they're not forgiving so they're off the cards. I understand that it's up to the rider not the bike etc etc so none of that please, just friendly advice on which bike around the 2k mark that have the forgiving property would be great. Thank you experienced riders!

I can't really be classed as experienced but would an older 400cc fit the bill perhaps?

My dad had a Ford Puma, but that was way back so I can't really remember what the acceleration was like (though I don't think it was stunning), so I employ my friend Wikipedia:

Quote:
the 1.7 125 PS version accelerated from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in 8.8 seconds

I haven't ridden anything over a 125, however, just from internet and sitting on the back of friends' bikes:

Any 400 or above will utterly destroy that.
500cc commuters will do 0-60 in 5 seconds.

600's will do it in 3.5, an R6 will do 0-110mph before your car gets to 60mph. It has nearly the same horsepower with less than 20% of the weight.

This is why people go on about not getting a supersports for your first bike, because they're not just powerful, they're ludicrous if you pin it.

Go down to your local training school, ask for a go on one of the 500's they use for DAS (refresher course or whatever). Probably cost you sub £100. Then you'll be in a much better position to figure out what you want.

Or, for free, find a friendly dealer that will let you have a go on one.

Most bikes will destroy a Puma that won't be as fast now as when it left the factory 10 years plus ago.

Edit, It wont be long before somebody is suggesting a SV.

Even an SV is going to do 0-60 twice as fast as his car.

How are you possibly wanting more power than a puma, I mean, come on, that's fast Shocked

But seriously, my bike will apparently do 60 in 3.1 seconds (could be wrong), and it's only a 600!

Seriously get anything 500+ and you'll be blown away.

Like others have said, anything 600cc plus will half the 0-60 time. I've not yet had a car that has come close to keeping up, and I rarely pin it, though many do try.

Is this a joke? Ford Puma's are slow compared to most bikes. Get yourself a CBR for something a little bit forgiving but lots of fun, an SV for more forgiving but less fun, or an ER5 for safe as fuck but still faster than your Puma.

Or

Just buy a Ninja and have 200% more fun, and feel more alive than ever before Mr. Green .

Did you add a couple of litres to that, to make the embarrassment sting less?

No such beast.

Another vote for the CBR600F, very forgiving yet absolutely mental when you pin it.

Or you could go for the slightly more docile Bandit/Hornet or even more still into the 500 commuters. Thumbs Up

True story.

I loved mine. It was the older style 1995 steel framed jobby.
It did kick ass until it was nicked.

Dont get a 400, you will struggle for parts.
The only reason i have a 400 is cos i couldnt afford the insurance after the 600 got nicked.

Another vote for a CBR600F, I recommend a steelie based on experience, though I'm sure the newer ones are just as good. I've had plenty of bikes before this, but I wouldnt be worried about a n00b getting on one, infact plenty of my friends have had a go around a car park, and most of them haven't even done a CBT.

+1 CBR600f, any year will be good enough.

P.S. - Pumas are slow, even 500 twin commuters will be quicker to 60.

To be honest if all the OP is after is quick acceleration then you will find that a gpz500 has a regularly claimed 0-60 time of less than 4 seconds and will do more mpg than a sports 600 and will be easier and cheaper to maintain.

I would recommend a cbr600 as it give more of an introduction to sportsbikes in general, the handeling, braking, power delivery, riding position etc.... than a gpz could ever manage, for somebody who aspired to ride an R6, a sports/sports-touring 600 is definetly the way to go Thumbs Up

Errr, I've driven a few Pumas, they're not fast...at all. They're quite fun to drive, handling is pretty good for what it is.
Standard 1.7 is more like 9,2 secs to 60:

My old 250 would probably out accelerate that.

You'll probably find any commuter would keep you entertained, but I get the feeling you like sports.

This isn't cheap and regardless of what you think an R6 won't kill you, the insurance will though.

You could possibly look at ZZRs, pretty nippy buggers! ER6F isn't too sporty but looks decent. CBR600F as everyone else has said.

Snowie was checking specs of the SV650 last night.
Even the earlier carbed models can drop the quarter mile in under 12 seconds with a terminal nudging 120mph.

I THINK that ought to make one just a TAD more interesting than a Ford Puma!

cheap, chearful, forgiving, alrounder, without the expense, complexity or weight of a 'four', and a good first big-bike to cut teeth on.

You think.. Laughing

You thought wrong.

Maybe (just maybe) if it was a Daewoo Mattress.. but a Puma provides many more smiles per mile than an SV.
