Got a couple of question's about the Bike MOT

my bike is booked in for it's MOT in a week or so's time and i am just going through and checking and ticking off with everything as i check it on the bike. this is the website i am using to do base my check's on:

https://www.motuk.com/Motorcycle%20MOT.asp

thing's i have found so far which my bike might fail on-

- Reflector's - will they pass or fail it, it has none on the rear ?

- Exhaust - It say's on a MOT website i have to have a " BSAU 193 stamp " i don't think my arrow exhaust system has one, it has the arrow symbol and arrow stamp but not a BSAU Stamp /

- Head Set Bearing's - how do i check them ?

also -swingarm or suspension linkage bearings and
Pivot bearings ?

Any help would be appreciated Smile

Matt

You can buy stick on number plate reflectors for a few quid off eBay. Had a set of hands on my old CB.

Most MOT tester's tend not to worry so much about exhausts. Only thing you can do is take it there and see if passes of fails based on that.

Thanks

Since when did we need Reflectors to pass an MOT?

None on the 535 and that's just been MOT'd and none on Jinny when it was done last year.

Yeah i didn't think they worried about the exhaust side of thing's to much as they must have load's of aftermarket can's or bodged can's in as well Thumbs Up

as for the reflector issue it's been in for quite a few year's some MOT test center's must not care.

how big does the reflector have to be ?

the reflecter needs to be about the size of a 2p...

Head race bearing... hold your front brake and push up and forward on the handlebars can you feel movement?

Rear position reflectors are there so no-one rear ends you if your tail lamp goes out..... Probably not applicable to cruisers...... of why would you ride one Razz (or is this joke too subtle for bcf?)

Rear red refectors are required, but on many bikes they are incorporated into the tail lamp lens

see the bit with kinda teeth on it? there will be one of them somewhere below your top yoke you need to tighten it, get a flatheaded screw driver or cold chisel and tighten it like that (hit it with a hammer in the direction that tightens) if that doesn't work tighten the top bolt and if that doesn't work you need new head race bearings... I took a bike that the head race bearings were completely fucked on and he still passed it with a £10 tip Wink the mot is £29.50 i just give £40 and say im sure it will pass anyway... always does

Almost certainly fail. They will probably flog you one for a nominal amount to stick to the numberplate.

Current rules are that it should be as quiet as a standard system in reasonable condition in the opinion of the MOT tester (who could be deaf.....).

SomeGuyy wrote:

Support the bike so the front wheel of the bike is in the air. Then grip the forks and try to pull them backwards and forwards. If you can feel a clonk then they are lose. Try turning the forks and feel if they turn smoothly. If not then they are likely too tight and / or knackered (notchy).

Support the bike with the back wheel in the air, NOT supported under the swinging arm or the rear wheel. Attempt to lift the wheel and feel for play before the suspension stops moving easily. A small amount is normal, but more than 5mm or so is probably a fail (and a new bike might well be pretty close to that amount).

All the best

Keith
