Hello, i have a bit of a problem my 1956 model19s Norton has a "quick release" rear wheel. This means by removing the spindle on right, the three studs holding it to the brake drum and lifting up the hinged rear mudguard the wheel can be removed. Leaving the sprocket-ed drum, brake plate and chain in place on a stub axle fastened on the left. Now when everything is in place and tightened up there is movement if i hold the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it backwards and forwards, as if a bearing has gone. I have tried spacers and shims between the stub axle and the brake drum although none are shown in the maintenance manual or the spares list to take up the slack but this makes the drum binded on the brake plate. Any one got any ideas? Rolling Eyes

Ive got a 73 norton commando, and ive had this issue when the spacer in the sproket carrier fell out, if its not a bearing issue, you could be missing a spacer.. do you have a workshop manual?

Ill try scan a blown up image if i can find it!

Drop me a pm if your still stuck.

Steve.

Owning an old British iron is best done with an owners club behind you.

I was in the NOC for a while but found it obsessed with twins, in particular commando's. One time i asked there spares department for a rear brake drum with 21 teeth for my 19s. They sent a drive socket for a atlas. Sad when you think Norton made singles for seventy years and twins for thirty.
