Has anyone heard about the new Axiam Quadricycles they're planning on introducing into the UK, so 16 year olds can have the safety of the car with only a moped license, presumably then they only need the CBT?

My french isn't so good, but looking at the stats on page 11 of their press release: https://www.aixam.com/ressources/pages/marque/DP_AIXAM-MEGA.pdf

It looks like its a 400cc, capable of 28mph top speed, and a range of 312miles from a 16 litre tank.

At top speed it'd take over 11 hours to cover the full distance. Although it's great for kids who need mobility, I can just see all the roads getting clogged up with these pootling along at 28mph.

Hopefully they won't change the law to allow learners onto motorways then Wink But then if it can't reach 40mph it won't be allowed on a motorway anyway?

One thing I can't tell from the document is what a quadricycle is? It appears it has drive only from a single wheel? If that's right must be a challenge to go around a corner, especially at low speed. Unless the diff can switch to the outside wheel, but then if so, how does it differ from a car?

This is what they look like:

https://www.boston.com/cars/newsandreviews/overdrive/2011/09/23/Aixam-City.jpg

On the news it said they were hoping to sell 2,000 in the first month/year, I forget.

What's new about it?

My radio show was, at one time, sponsored by the local Aixam dealer and that was 12 years ago.

Hideous shitbox of a thing, no proper crash testing, woefully underpowered and an absolute menace, even worse than the execrable GeeWhizz.

In my view, they shouldn't be allowed on our roads.

Best I can make out they will need a FULL moped licence to drive one rather than just a CBT.

All the best

According to the press release they sell a lot of these quadricycles on the continent and this is the first time they have brought them to the UK? The model is brand new as well.

The model might be new, but the concept and the company certainly aren't, they've been squeezing out variations of this steaming turd of a vehicle since the mid 80s and, as I've said, they've been available here for over a decade.

In fact, I passed a well known South London bike dealer today, that have diversified into cheap cars (they were Reliant specialists at one time) and they've got a couple of used ones on their forecourt, yours for under 700 quid.

The reason they are so popular on the continent is, in many countries you don't need any form of licence to drive them, but I doubt that is, or ever will be, the case here.

IIRC they're rather expensive brand new, 7 grand onwards, then again if it stops the mummy's boy from buying a ped I'm sure the bank of mum and dad will fund it

Effectively its a car that can do 28mph on the flat and a lot less up a hill.

Its going to be a damn site more difficult to overtake one of those then it is a moped! Absolutely ridiculous.

No doubt mummy and daddy will buy their precious son/daughter one to avoid them getting on one of those awful bike things that go so fast (28 mph...).

They can be de-restricted to do 60-70 however so I imagine piston heads is going to get what we get with our beloved ped boiiiis "hw do i dreestric ma car enit, or if man putz d k'n'n air filteeer will it beat my mates saxo?" So I'm guessing the derestrictions will be policed just as well as current peds?

Parts will probably cost an arm and a leg for when this 16 year plows into a lamppost cos he found his first pube and took his eyes off the road /Smile

I think I'm just bitter and jealous they'll be warm Sad

They're actually good for 55mph (rather you than me!) but you need a B1 licence to drive them, so 17 and older only.

Edit, after the licence changes in January, a 16 year old with a full moped licence can drive one, but the price will kill it, just as it did with Reliant.

Really looking forward to coming up behind one of these on the local hedgerow lined NSL A roads Rolling Eyes

I suspect the only thing scarier than that idiotic 28mph limiter will be the 16 year old's insurance premiums to drive it Shocked

I think the strategically placed "segs" on the edge of my left boot sole will be getting scraped down the length of these monstrosities if I am held up going uphill.

How's the insurance?

Here in Czech rep. it's cheaper to get a real car, used one of course.

These have been around for ages in one form or another. I was even quite tempted to buy one when a very cheap one came up for sale locally. An insurance quote quickly scotched the idea - surprisingly expensive!

IIRC the (un-restricted) diesel version I looked at did about 45-50mph. They also used to do a petrol version that was quite a bit quicker (~70mph top speed I think).

Somebody on another forum I frequent had one of these but didn't like it much. He said that parts were expensive, the CVT gearbox was very primitive, and that the (expensive fully synth) oil had to be changed quite frequently.

Really they seem to be designed for French pensioners to drive a few miles to the boulangerie in the morning, rather than as a replacement for a 'proper car'.

Insurance wise they are very cheap, it would cost me £600 compared to £4000-£6000 on a saxo.

Although I have a feeling insurance will shoot up once the laws change

This looks more fun although defeats the insurance and age requirement.

You know as well as I do the delay a vehicle failing to make progress causes on a narrow B road, and that even bikes have to be very careful getting through. So Middle Finger

Just mouthing off then. As usual.

This confrontational "outlaw" persona you try so desperately to put across on here is most amusing.

It's a bit like a re-invention of the original reliant idea - a car you can drive on a bike licence.
The Bond Minicar you actually had to lift the bonnet and climb inside to kickstart the engine.

You can drive a Peel P50 on a moped licence I believe.
