Hi folks

Got a list of things to do before getting the bike back in the road and one is checking the valve clearances. The bike is on 30k miles and I'm not sure if its been done yet.

I'm a bit of a novice mechanic but always willing to learn, so I thought I'd give it a bash.

I've stripped the fairings off (all except front), removed the fuel tank, air box and housing, HT leads and their control box (not sure what that's called) and now I'm left with this:

Now for the next step... As you can see the carbs are still in and so is the radiator and spark plugs. I'm aware I need to remove the radiator or at least try and suspend it forward to gain access, but do I need to take the carbs off? I don't want to be messing about with the carbs as I know they can cause a lot of problems!

Thanks

There are only two problems when removing the carbs on your bike.
The main one being, if the carbs haven't been off in while, they don't like coming out of the inlet rubbers.
The only other issue is making sure the throttle cable is correctly routed when you put them back on. It's very easy to trap the cable with tank.
If you can persuade them out of the inlets is a straight forward job!

Do the carbs need to be removed to check the clearances? I've checked the manual but all it said is: Remove air cleaner and housing, remove radiator mounting bolts and grommet and tip it to the forks - after that it goes onto how to check the timing etc, but doesn't mention the carbs/throttle bodies or throttle cable.

I've looked at that thread, it's an excellent guide! It's just getting to that stage Laughing From what he says, all I've got left to do is remove the radiator. I'll try removing the radiator tomorrow and see if there's room to get the cam cover off.

I'm guessing I need to remove the throttle cables that go into the carbs and remove the spark plugs before taking the head off?

I was always of the opinion that you had to replace the gasket if you take the head off, but not many people seem to bother.

You are removing the rocker cover, not the cylinder head, you only need to replace the rocker gasket if it's obviously damaged, although it's good practice to renew all gaskets once they'vebeen removed.

According to the Haynes, you don't need to remove the carbs but it suggests removing the coils for ease of access to the valves!

Got there in the end and here are my results:

Only one valve is out, and it's out by 0.01mm, not sure it's worth doing or what.

Also my plugs looked a little foul, they've only done a couple of thousand miles maximum, wondering what could cause that?

Judging by the crap on your plug,it looks like it may have been loose at some point.

I'll give them a wipe down and hopefully they will be ok.
