I have a part time job interview at a garden centre (Don't laugh) Confused

The only way I have of getting there would be on my bike. Obviously I will be wearing my trusty alpinestars gear. Do you think this would affect my job, not wearing smart trousers/shirt? I really don't wanna have to get there, take my gear off then ask them to put it somewhere. Embarassed

I wouldn't go on a bike tbh. Go on the bus, get a taxi.

Turn up smart, turn up early. Read up on the company before you go, don't be cocky.

I have to agree. I've an interview on Wednesday, and there is no way I'm taking my bike. I'll be going on the train and turning up smart.

+1 on no bike and/or suit under textiles (it needs to be a suit as your shirt sleeves will be creased to fuck).

When you get teh job by all means turn up on the bike. I imagine garden centre uniform is going to by black trouser + polo shirt, so should be fine under textiles. You need an alternate plan for when its pissing with snow though.

No it wouldn't be.

If you get the job, you'll be earning £10,000 a year or more.

Or just wear the suit on the bike for the one time in your life that it's reasonably unavoidable.

To be honest, there are very few places in the entire country that would cost me more than 150 quid return to get to via public transport/taxi combo. Even at a 1 in 20 chance of getting the job that's worth it. And you're presumably talking about commuting distance, not up to 500 miles away.

Not sure I would be earning 10k a year on a part time garden centre job. Laughing

And I'm not complaining about riding the bike there long term, I would love that. Just for the interview, don't wanna seem a state.

Missed the 'part time' point. Sad

Still, same deal applies. The transport to get there is likely to cost a week's wages or less. I'd call that worth it.

Having thought about it, I'm not entirely sure about wearing a suit for a job interview in a garden centre. I thought the general rule was to dress 'one step up' from the uniform you'd be expected to wear on the job.

That is, you'd wear suit, shirt and tie to a managerial interview, but smart clothing to an interview to stack shelves.

I have been to smart interviews on bike and I think I *looked* ok.
If you have a large topbox, it will fit your jacket/leathers, and you can take smart shoes with you. I personally cba taking shoes. Instead I polish my boots.

Park a little away from the shop so they wont notice you changing. get there early Thumbs Up I wouldnt wear a suit jacket for a part time shop job, its a bit ott. Dont take your bike gear in with you.

*but every other aspect was shit*

Finding a bag big enough is the tricky part.

The problem as I see it are the helmet and boots. Other stuff can be more easily hidden. Try and find someone to give you a lift, or just fork out for a bus or taxi.

Unfortunately some employers also have negative reactions towards bikes, such as 'he won't be coming to work in the rain', all the way to 'he's a chav and a yob who is only interested in doing wheelies and killing kittens'.

Of course, many others may have positive feelings towards bikers. But I'd simply make sure there was no possible reason for them not to give you the job.

I disagree with this - if anything, I find it to be a positive talking point or ice-breaker, even if the interviewer is not interested in riding. If you're any good at communicating at all, any prejudice the interviewer has will be dispelled after 20 seconds conversation with you.

I agree that it is better to drive/bus it to an interview, but in the past I have ridden to interviews when needs be and on one occasion I got the job. Just leave the helmet in your top box or whatever and carry your riding clothes in with you (apologise for bringing them with you if you want, interviewers are humans and will understand).

I've ridden to several interviews on my bike and got the job. However, i have never sat in interview in my textiles, i always take them off and ask politely where to put them / put them in panniers / top box etc.

Why not wear a shirt and trousers under your textiles, and then put your tie on in the car park (out of the way of your interviewer, mind Wink ). There's at least a couple of interviews where i've done that, put my shoes on etc in the car park, and gone in carrying just my helmet whenever possible (although on a few occassions, a bag full of my textiles too) and politely asked where to put it. Sometimes it's been a nice icebreaker.

And whenever possible, got a lift / otherwise avoided going on the bike.

Jesus, all my interviews were done after I rode to the place.

Textiles. Take them off and put them in a bag, bungee to bike and walk in with trousers, shirt, tie and shoes.

Really not too hard.

Completely agree, which is why I mentioned others may have a different reaction. I just know of someone who turned up on a motorcycle to an interview, and the person giving the interview wasn't impressed because 'they are death traps etc'.

Cool related story bro:

Took a call this afternoon inviting me to a job interview.

30 quid return (advance) by train+tube, or 15 quid or so on the bike.

Tempted to take the bike for a jolly, but it's a dark suit and tie deal so probably not quite ideal.

Interview friends.

This. Or use some other transport, be it buses and walking/hitching, a taxi, whatever.
