Hello everyone

After a long rest in winter, my lovely CBR will not start unless I go for a run and kick start on 2 gear..I have tried leaving it on and I even went for a 15 minute ride to get the battery charged up but no success ..will not start with the button.

Any suggestions please ?

Thank you

Have you even bothered charging the battery of getting it checked, batteries die and a short ride won't charge it up, especially if its proper flat.

I presume you mean bump starting - last I checked, no CBR ever had a kick start.
have you tried removing the battery and plugging it into a battery charger overnight? That's the traditional fix for a flat battery.

Surprised

Undo the two clips on the battery cover, lift the cover, undo the neg (black wire) terminal first, then the pos (red wire) terminal, lift the battery out....

" .. is what I need....half price to Halford`s..so good deal ..I m going for it !!

You are best getting a charger that either is specific for motorcycles or has a motorcycle battery setting. So that will not be that Maypole 7416 one. As in (from this link)
amazon.co.uk wrote:

No mention of motorcycles.

Motorcycle batteries need to be charged at a lot lower amps than car batteries. Using a car charger can damage the battery internals. This may not be immediately obvious (you'll just think battery charged). However, you'll find it will not hold its charge and/or life expectancy reduced somewhat drastically.

This is true of the older style with the lead plates. These are small and close together so can easily be warped by too much current. Also true for the gel type as these require specific current charging and can be damaged if not.

If Halfords is your only source you'll need something like this one - click this text for link.

However, there are other and better bike specific kit available. Accumate/Optimate kit is very good. They have specific cycles to handle gel type batteries. Can be had online or from most bike dealers. Even the likes of WEMoto offer a good charger as an alternative. If you're bothered about an alternative cheaper then check out Aldi/Lidl when these things come along in their annual offers.

How long did you charge it for? Make sure you have left it to charge for long enough, for example, over night.
The battery may be knackered though and not capable of holding a charge (quite common if it is an old battery that hasn't been looked after for long cold periods). Do you have a multimeter that you are able to check its integrity with?

What are you battery voltage readings?

Less than 12.5 and the battery is probably dead.

If its less than 13.5 when charging then you have an issue in the charging system.

dead easy, just turn the tester to DC an set voltage range to 20v put each probe on black terminal then red an look at the screen on the tester, take it to any garage they should test it for free though

im guessing your battery is dead an it will accept a charge but then as soon as you disconnect from the charger, the charge dissipates = dead battery

To be healthy a battery needs to have sufficient voltage and capacity reserve. A battery charger can report a healthy battery by measuring the feedback voltage but a heavily sulphated battery can have this voltage but no capacity or 'store of energy' to do any work.

If you have used that conventional charger on your battery, then even if it WAS healthy it probably now isn't. It depends on the type of battery.

Yours displays all the signs of the battery being knackered. The tests outlined above can give you a good indication, but if you think your battery is ok you can check the charging system by putting a meter over the terminals and running the engine. You should get somewhere between 14 and 15 volts at the battery at 5000rpm. If you're seeing this, the battery is knackered for sure. If you're not it could be the charging system. 90% chance it's the battery.

Check everything first, but if it is the battery go for a Motobatt or something.

Test the rec/rec and stator before wiring up a new battery or you may end up killing it. Reg/recs are a common thing to go on Most older Hondas. I had to replace mine on my cbr600 2002
