Just got some new Dunlop 208s fitted to the Gixxer. First time to be honest that I've had new tyres on a sportsbike. The guy who fitted them put the fear of God into me warning of the 'running in' period. Take it really easy, ride like it's wet, for the first 50 miles or so, no hard acceleration or hard braking, watch your cornering.
Apparently they are not any use for scratching until 100 miles or so.
Any one else had any experiences of brand new tyres and how did you cope with them. ____________________ GSXR600K4 Blue - fastest colour. No mods as yet. Happy with standard bike.

Me too, just had a new set of Bridgestone BT-014s put on and basically ran em in normally for about a 100miles.
They seem fine now but I have bit of a quandry too....
"Taking it easy" implies not ragging it around, not being to eager with the right hand, and not trying to grind off your pegs. If that's the case then how do you "run in" the entire tyre? Surely the first time you go all the way over it's going to be on virgin rubber no?? |

This has been talked about so many times. Lots of theorys flying around over how many miles you need to do etc...
To be honest, the releasing agent wears off after about 100 yards, but give it a few miles for them to warm up, and lean gently and slowly the first few times. You'll be fine, just go easy.
If you really want, you can use a brilo pad and some brake cleaner / carb cleaner to get the agent off the tyre. Good trick I learnt! ____________________ ZXR750R (M2) - For the road.

I found that wearing off all the balled up rubber on the edge of well used scrubbed race tires was far more dodgy than brand new tires ____________________ My Bikes in order:- Yamaha RXS100 / Suzuki X7 250 / Yamaha RD350LC / Kawasaki

Releasing agent is used so they can be taken out of the mould the tyres are cast in. ____________________ Like a Yorkie - I'm not for the girls |

Got a new 208 dunny on the back today £112 gone , tbh it felt good from the second I left the shop, maybe thats because I have been running a bald tyre for so long or the fact its almost as wide as a car tyre 190/70!
When my old GSXR had both tyre's done, it was kinda butt clenching as they left the huge stickers on both wheels which I failed to notice. Felt like the bike was trying to fall in a straight line. ____________________ 2004 RSV Factory

It depends a lot on the make of tyre. Conti's and Avon's seem to stick like glue from the moment you drive off the garage forecourt due to them using a different method of releasing their tyres from the moulds. Others slide around a bit more. A point to remember is that it's not just the release agent to be wary of. On a new tyre the surface is smoother than a baby's backside and takes a few miles to roughen up before it works at it's best.
However whatever the tyre brand, as a general rule of thumb the hotter the day is (and so the hotter the road) the quicker you can scrub them in. On my current set (Conti RA's) which were fitted on a really hot day I had completely removed the chicken strips within 15miles |

I fully endorse the overuse of caution whilst breaking in new tires. Especially with Dunlops. My last set, a pair of 208ZRs felt greasy for the first 20 miles of hard riding but didn't really return any ill effects. While running in my current set of Dunlop Qualifiers I noted the same 'greasy' feeling while at any kind of lean angle but didn't let it bother me. Until the rear let loose in a turn at only partial throttle and I got a nasty little snap from the rear end. Could have been worse but still a scary little reminder to play nice. So for the love of God be mindful of fresh rubber.
The BT014s I had, though, were ready for action from the word go. So go figure. ____________________ https://www.bikepics.com/members/californiarookie/04gsxr600/
