To determine if the hard disk needs to be repaired or replaced, contact the manufacturer of your computer. If you can't back up (for example, you have no CDs or other backup media), you should shut down your computer and restart when you have backup media available. In the meantime, do not save any critical files to this disk.

Not a bad choice, just found Intel Pro series SSDs to be that little bit more resilient than Samsung, OCZ & Kingston at work.

Looks good, but their customer service is awful.
I had a rant thread about it a few months ago when one of their sdcards failed.

Buy from Amazon then, as it happens, it's cheaper.

A year ago, I would have said to not trust anyone but Intel or Samsung for SSDs.

I'm not longer as plugged into the hardware market, but if it was my money, I'd still wouldn't go anywhere else.

(I definitely would never have bought the Cruical M4. I've heard too many bad stories.)

I'd say that still holds true except for OCZ. The rest of the market seems to struggle for performance consistency & reliability. Intel give you industry leading reliability & performance consistency. Samsung is in the middle ground between performance, reliability & consistency. While OCZ holds the performance crown but their drives need a bit of active TLC on the OS to keep them on top of their game.

I had the opposite when my 32gb MicroSD failed.

I'd had it over a year as I'd forgotten about it for ages after it failed. Sent them a long rant about the fact that they're the only branded flash storage that I owned (and didn't buy for a few ponds on ebay) and they're the only one that's failed. Got a replacement sorted for free, just took a week or two to arrive.

I bought all of my other flash storage (usb) really cheap because I didn't care if they died. I had backups.

The Crucial M4 has been flawless up to now.
But over 4yrs of 24/7 use in a winbox as a o/s drive.... I think it's done pretty well.

It may not actually be failing, but I'll replace it and bump it to less critical role.

I have an Intel 520 120gb in the laptop, runs fine but gets much less use.

Spunked for the Samsung 850 500gb EVO, should be here within 24hrs.

Addition. OCZ was bought out by Toshiba a few years ago when OCZ filed for bankruptcy.

Same, m4 in my main comp has been flawless and fast. Probably middle aged by now.

Also got one of those M4 drives and as above, its been fine. Got a few of those Samsung 850 drives too and they're lovely and quick.

The only ones that have failed for me ( multiple times ) have been made by OCZ.

this is interesting, not heard much about SSDs failing as yet. I haven't use any due to not being able to afford to build a new rig as yet (will be holding off until DDR4 now).

mechanical hard drive failure is fairly rare,
I did find this which is an interesting read on the endurance of ssds
https://itblog.sandisk.com/ssd-endurance-speeds-feeds-needs/
this I found of interest and may affect the way drives are purchased for purposes of endurance

Quote:

SSD endurance is commonly described in terms of full Drive Writes Per Day (DWPD) for a certain warranty period (typically 3 or 5 years). In other words, if a 100GB SSD is specified for 1 DWPD, it can withstand 100GB of data written to it every day for the warranty period. Alternatively, if a 100GB SSD is specified for 10 DWPD, it can withstand 1TB of data written to it every day for the warranty period. Another metric that is used for SSD write endurance is Terabytes Written (TBW), which is used to describe how much data can be written to the SSD over the life of the drive. Again, the higher the TBW value, better the endurance of the SSD. What’s important to be careful about in this endurance specifications is the methodology used to determine these values. For example, the shorter the warranty period, the higher the DWPD will be for that specific SSD. Or larger the SSD drive capacity, higher the TBW for that specific SSD. In fact the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association’s standards subcommittee has now published two standards to help both SSD vendors and customers determine SSD endurance specifications for typical application usage.

Obviously, the higher the endurance the longer your drive will be able to operate and the more data it will be able to have written to it. Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? The trick isn’t in searching out the biggest number, but rather in understanding what you need and finding the solution that meets those needs without over-buying.

I am surprised that drives aren't made slightly larger (with the same capacity) with ICs in reserve that can replace damaged ICs on the fly. granted it would increase cost but could dramatically increase the lifespan of a drive and reduce the risk of data loss.

Never!

It's just a TS client really.
Spends most of it's time doing nothing, or RDP'd to NobCat.

A general non teccy question.

I have only had bog standard mechanical hard drives and only ever had 2 failures in all the years so I don't regard them as a problem reliability wise and you can get silly sizes for pennies now.

Are SSD's purely about the access speed. Would you recommend replacing a hard drive with SSD when 95% of my computer usage is web or microsoft office or are they purely for games?

Can you mix SSD and hard drives in a tower or does it revert to the slowest component and therefore pointless?

Yes, especially if your system is a little light on RAM.

Yes, the interface is universal you can mix and match as you please. There is no performance penalty on the faster drives as each drive gets its own dedicated interface. Actually a mix of smaller fast SSDs for system, applications & scratch space then large rotational hard drives for mass storage is a fairly common setup.
