insurance - policy that allows to ride other bikes?

like the title asks ...

which insurance co / broker have policies that allow you to ride another bike on a 3rd party only basis?

finding it harder to get this now ... one company quotes :-

Can I ride other bikes? Am I covered third party to ride any bike? Can I ride a friend's bike? Can I get temporary cover on someone else's bike?
No.

We do not provide a 'Riding Other Bikes' extension on the policy.

The 'Riding of any bike not belonging to the policyholder' cover was originally designed for emergency use only and misuse has resulted in an increase in claims due to riders having a go on an unfamiliar bike and then crashing it (eg, someone who has just passed their test riding their friend's R1).

This in turn would have a knock on effect to all policy holders and increase insurance premiums - which is something we all want to avoid

so who does provide this? thanks for any replies!

I've had it with bikesure the last few years - unsure of their current status as i haven't been in a position to renew yet since it expired in september.

Mate who insured with bikesure around july time had it included then also, so unless its a very recent change it might still be an option.

It can also depend on your individual information provided whether it will be offered or not, not nescessarily to do with the level of cover or company you take the cover with, for example how many years NCB or years with a full license you have under your belt.

I'd suggest the bike you are covered on yourself may also have a bearing. They are less concerned a customer who has insured his own S1000RR will be hopping on a Panigale and caught out by the power than the dude who they cover for his Yamaha YB100?

depends on your age and the bike insured.
rule of thumb was over 25 and a bike over 400cc would often entitle you to ride other bikes 3rd party only

H&R through wicked quotes (or was it tesco compare) cover me to ride other bikes, provided my licence allows.

Was with bikesure on a CBT with a Varadero and didn't have cover to ride other bikes or pillion cover, even after passing my tests.

I'm with H&R but they have 3 different underwriters.
KGM don't allow riding other bikes but Equity Red Star do (cost me an extra £16 to get riding other bikes)

As for age, I'm 24 with 2 years NCB, license held for <2 years at time of renewal... so I'm pretty sure it just depends on the underwriter your policy is with.
KGM seem to be pricks.. that's about all I've found.

I've been allowed to ride other bikes third party through wicked quotes for two years, since being 17, and this year I changed to MCE, who have also allowed me to do so. Smile

If you get a quote through thebikeinsurer it tells you in the comparisons if it allows use of other biked and overseas

Wicked quotes gave me 3rd party cover on any bike since I was 17!

Assume you need a full license, this is with my policy being TPF&T.

Aren't insurance companies bloody great. They love to take your money, often without permission under the pretence of doing YOU the bloody favour then surround themselves in red tape and bullshit. How can they deny riding other bikes when the insurance cert simply says may ride others. No mention of emergency use only there. And who would define the emergency anyhow! Twats!

I've had policy docs come through before with it on there, and then ring to clarify, been told because I was under 21/24 or whatever at the time it doesn't apply to me.

When I had an RF900 and DRZ400 insured on one policy, they wouldn't give me it, but they did on a separate policy at the same time on a GT550 and CB125.

The woman on the phone told me it was because I'd likely be riding bikes with less power and value or something. So basically Riding an RF9 means I'll be borrowing brand new blades every week, but the GT means I'll be riding with poor students on broken cb500s.
