This guy wants to buy my bike for £2.5k but he wants to do it through Paypal and have his shipping company pick the bike up. Is this risky?

What do I have to do to ensure 110% that this transaction would go smoothly and he wouldn't suddenly get back his £2.5k while keeping my bike?

Do I stick to my guns and say cash in hand only?

Thanks need a quick reply.

Edit: He says his shipping company will handle the log-book when I asked if he will be here to sign the papers.

It's a scam, never take paypal only bank transfer or cash.

Wouldn't do it, anything other than bank transfer and cash are a no-no for me.

The whole ''shipping company off to Nigeria'' would also be my reason for saying no.

Also if you do ever sell "blind" don't let them "handle" the logbook, write in the details, squiggle a signature and send it off only give the courier the new keeper bit.

Yeah I didn't want to sell blind, I need to meet the guy. Seems dodgy to me man. What are the potential risks of paypal? Could he just tell paypal "someone hacked my account didnt buy that" and they take the money back out of my account and refund him?

The words 'shipping agent' should be enough to put you off. Don't take the chance, it's almost certainly a scam.

Can't answer you on that one but I've always wondered what happens if paypal is credited and then you whisk the funds out and then delete your bank details from them? Bit of a ballache to do if you sell a lot on ebay but for the odd large sale??? Thinking

Or (more than likely), he'll be using a hacked PayPal account...

Handing over to a courier wouldn't bother me in the slightest. As long as I have a name and address to put on the V5C, you can put any old squiggle in the "signature" boxes. Absolutely you send that off yourself though.

If he has the money to use PayPal, he can do a direct bank transfer. If not, sod off.

I'm new to this clearly but yeah, it's a resounding no for anything other than cash in hand it seems. How would a bank transfer even work, don't you have to give out bank details for that? Even that sounds a bit dodgy to me.

Anyhow the guy's fucked off now suddenly after offering him the option to pay by cash so probably was a scammer after all.

Laughing Laughing and there was me getting excited that I could have a ninja tomorrow Mr. Green

You only need to give them your sort code, name and account number that's it.

You'll have a record of theirs too. There's not a lot of scamming that I can see that is doable onto the innocent party by just having these details.

The only thing I fear is them calling their bank up and saying I never wanted to transfer the money, it was a mistake or I was hacked.

I assume they can't just say that, but I really don't know how it works to be honest.

The bank has no right to take money out of your account and give it to someone else once its cleared. Bank transfers are as safe as cash in that respect.

PayPal will pass your details on to a debt collection agency, my brother had something similar happen to him. Funds in PayPal account, he withdrew it, eBay charged him sellers fees, in between clearing PayPal and charging the fees (a month) his debit card expired and he had a debt collection agency hounding him for his credit card details over the phone. It was less than £30 they were after, too.

Right so definitely learned that Paypal is a big no. That's reassuring James83, transfer is an option then.

Cold hard cash or gtfo.

Bank transfer at an absolute push.

But never pay pal.

And never sell to someone called George Agdgdgwngo...

I'd personally only take cash, or if it was someone I knew or someone a friend vouched for then bank account. I still wouldn't take paypal though. And whoever it was I'd make sure to get two signed receipts stating sold as seen no warranties or returns, one copy for me and one for them.

I bought a bike using Paypal, but I'm not a thieving scam artist and the guy got his money (and his paypal fees! £130 or so!). Tried to tell him it was 13% transaction fee, he didn't listen and thought I said £30.

Almost. My understanding, and it's quite a few years out of date, is that if the funds had been credited from a forged or stolen cheque that hasn't bounced yet, then the sending bank can shout "Fraud chain!" and claw the transfer back.

Bits of paper, the root of all evil.

I had the same 'offer' when I put my scooter on gumtree. I do know of a guy who almost fell for the scam, luckily he saw sense before the bike got picked up and pulled out.

Dunno. I really don't need anything more than a small cheap commuter to get though winter.

I'll probably buy a Fireblade.

Maybe try a 400? Lots of fun for little money though not the most practical as a commuter (that said I rack the miles up on my zzr)

Though I get the sarcasm .... I just filled my fireblade up this morning, odometer read 119.5 and I put in 12.81 litres. About 42mpg. That's on a 15 mile commute over variable roads, including slow suburban south London. It's the nicest bike to commute on thus far.
