Hole in Downpipe - Advice

Hi guys. Bike has been sounding strange recently, had a look around and have found a little hole in the downpipes. I'm planning selling the bike in the next couple of weeks, what would you do? Get it welded? Exhaust putty? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Weld or replace.

If the bike is generally a shit heap then some exhaust putty won't be out of place and won't devalue it further.

Depends if you're the honest seller type, and on how bad the hole actually is.

Personally, I'd be tempted to sell as is if we're talking less than a 2mm hole. I'd be honest about it in the advert too.

I think I will get it welded. Trying to upload a picture but phone won't allow me for some reason. I'm by no means dishonest, just not motor mechanical minded. The putty said permanent repair so thought I would get some advice. The hole is probably about 2mm but I'm sure I can get it welded easily.

What has caused the hole?

It's not the drain hole, is it?

All exhaust repairs are temporary. They generally corrode from the inside out and once a hole appears it's usually joined by others. You may find there's not much left to weld.

If it sounds different now than before then it isn't the drain hole.

Put a screw in it. I've done that lots of times to pinholes in downpipes. Just find a self tapping screw the right size and bung it in the hole.

Of course most people would say never do this or it will make your babies be born naked and cause you to careen down the motorway in a fireball crashing into a busload of nuns and orphans, but ignore them. A screw in the downpipe is a decent and cheap temporary (years in some cases) fix and I have never had any issue with it at an MOT.

Few months ago, after having left my cbr600 laid up for 6 months,
got it back on the road and it promptly blew a hole where the two 2-1 reducers join to the final 2-1.
Jabbed it lightly with a screwdriver and the hole started to grow ...
Not a big problem, still only talking 1-1.5cm or so...

Whipped the headers off and popped round my welding buddies workshop.

"That section will need a full wrap" he said...

After fannying around a bit to entertain me, it needed a full wrap round the whole section...

This was done by a friend as a favor, cost me nothing and did the job well however illustrates how a little hole can be a sign of far worse corrosion

The problem is gone... for now

I'll try and take a lower resolution photo when I get back from work as my photos are too large of an attachment by the looks of things. If you Google Street triple Downpipe though you will see it is 3 into 1. On the 3 pipes they are joined by horizontal pipe, it's next to the weld on one of the horizontal, about 2mm max. I'll try and get a picture up aroind 5pm.

I've give a breakers a call see how much another set is, There should be loads about. There are a few Triumph specialist breakers out there.
