I think it would be wise to stick to the manufacturer's recommendation for tyre sizes, but choose one that is suitable for the weather conditions - some are better in the dry, some are better in the wet, some are good all-round - and this is based on tread pattern and the compound used in the rubber, not necessarily the size.

I had a similar issue with the front tyre on my 125, but through trial and error found it ran much better with 2psi less than the recommended pressure.

This could be down to my pressure gauge being 2psi out, but 2psi less than it was reading before, made the bike feel much more stable.

Probably the type of tyres you are using thin tyres aren't that bad at gripping

Going for wider tyres will give you worse handling. You may get a bigger contact patch, but you only need this if the rear is spinning up on acceleration, or the front is breaking traction under braking.

More likely that you just have shit or worn out tyres. You should find a lot of confidence in new tyres from a decent manufacturer, regardless of width.

If you can get a set of Michelin M45s for your bike, I recommend them for small bikes. Good deep tread pattern so they work well in the wet or on poor road surfaces, sticky enough that they never scared me, and really cheap. I think I paid under £100 for a pair of them on a CB250RS.

If you have tubed tyres, they're easy enough to fit at home with some 9" tyre levers. Worth splashing out for new inner tubes too.

Try it with a little less air, and again with a little more until it feels right.

I pumped up the tyres on my car at the local Tesco on Sunday morning - their gauge showed 32psi. When I got home and checked with my digital gauge, they were reading 45psi.

Only 1/2 mile, but the steering felt very light until I let them down to 32psi. Just saying.

Single Rider = 25psi (1.75bar) Front, 29psi (2.0bar) Rear

Rider + Pillion = 25psi (1.75bar) Front, 32psi (2.25bar) Rear
