Just rebuilt the engine and box, bought it last summer and it hasn't been on the road since 1952. This Model was the last sidevalve to win the TT ('22), it'll do 65-70 but it's happiest at 45-50

The crank was rebuilt by Alpha, the mainshafts are riveted into the flywheels and they had moved over time causing ovality. New mainshafts were turned and hardened, then riveted back in. The big end had also moved in the flywheels so an oversized big end was made, the crank was jig bored true, and the big end fitted. I found an old VW piston that was an 80 thou oversize so that was adapted and fitted. The carb is an AMAC ( pre Amal) TT, which us basically a needleless racing carb from the 20's. Vintage carb expert Martyn Bratby converted it so it uses needles and jets from Amal Concentrics, making tuning a lot easier

Did you do anything to prevent similar wear again in the crank assembly?

Max at Alpha reckons the crank will outlive me ( I'm 45).! Hopefully with modern materials and being a one off build compared to production line tolerances, it should stay together. It won't get as much abuse as it probably got for the first 20 yrs of its life, though I do like to use it as it's maker intended..😄

I've clocked 60 on my phone, it's barely done 1000miles since rebuild though, I got it on the road at the end of May. I did the Banbury Run and also last weeks ' Levis Cup Trial' , which is a 100 mile road trial. It should do 65-70 without a problem, and with different cams and no silencer 75-80, although I won't be trying that as at 79x105 bore and stroke, it's not really meant to be revved to death !

Lovely bike you have there. I've only ever seen the Sunbeam S7 and S8 so this is a nice treat.

Pre '37 Sunbeams are known as Marston Sunbeams after John Marston, the founder. In '37, they were bought out by AMC, then Bsa in '43. There are different owners clubs for Marston and non Marston 'beams. They were considered by many to be more of a 'Rolls Royce' of motorcycling than Brough Superiors, because Sunbeam made virtually everything in-house. Every Marston Sunbeam that left the factory had the tank lined in Gold leaf

Timing Chest..Basically inlet and exh cams, with followers sat on top, then push rods on top of that, going through housing to tappets under the valves... Apologies they're a bit low res, struggling with resizing a bit !

Primary side.. Clutch has 4 solid steel plates, and 4 containing 44 7/16" dia cork inserts each
