low tech navigation aid wanted

Can anyone suggest a low tech solution instead of taking a Sat Nav or GPX gizmo?

I want some sort of waterproof paper, and permanent marker combo.

Planning a byways ride tomorrow, weather looks grim. My notes will probably get soggy as will my map, if it's not blown about. I know I could get a water proof OS map, but I have loads of maps and can't afford to change them all.

Would like a way to write notes on route on a sheet of plastic or something, that won't smudge or wash off, and is cheap and hardwaring. Don't need to clean it off, if I can throw it away, though recycling preferable.

yeah, always ends up wet and smudged in the end, though it's the best I can do for now is that

fords, UCRs on rivers, dropped in muddy puddles, crash it and it rips and the paper dissolves.
I've tried writing on the plastic folders themselves though, but don't stay on.

Laminaters are cheap - I'd sometimes print off a relevant map/instructions and laminate it.

But then so are waterproof pouches for your phone, which solves a good few problems.

Neither may be practical for tomorrow - so permanent marker on a plastic sheet sounds reasonable .

yeah as for my phone, that goes inside two zip lock freezer bags, and is tucked away

it really just hadn't even occurred to me to buy a laminator, that might just be the answer, top of the Christmas present list

I find it easier to write the instructions down and commit them to memory (but I do stash the hardcopy in the topbox just in case!)

I normally use the clear plastic wallet gaffa taped to the bar pad and gaffa'd up. But, like you, if some wind can get in, it just blows the back end out and the paper gets ruined so I was looking for a better of bodging something on.

Although I like having to pull over and inspect maps and try to work out where I am.

Use a compass or use nearby places/signposts as a reference. Know a rough estimate of the distance and direction.


Or follow someone that looks like they know where they are going.
