So, last night was spent stripping my carbs again...

i really dont want to split the individual carbs, but is it worth "dunking" the carb bodies in something to make sure they are all clean inside all the passageways?

or would you just use an airline with carb cleaner?

I think it would be worth doing as much as you can whilst they are in this state. I would use an ultra-sonic cleaner if you can get hold of one - but you would probably have to separate them and do one at a time.

I wouldn't bother breaking the rack unless you have known issues with air leaks on throttle shafts or fuel leaks on the joining tubes - else you will be into new seals on these parts.

Carb cleaber and air should be sufficient in the most part.
What was the symptom that prompted the strip down ?

basically it was running like a bag of spanners:

miss firing

sooted plugs

rough idling etc...

so, seeing as its a new year an all that jazz, thought i would treat it to a tear down.

ive already found (an replaced) a cracked inlet.

Carbs look a bit grubby, an ive found some stuff covered in green varnish looking stuff, but the jets look clear - to my untrained eye

will spray cleaner over stuff an see how it goes.

im hoping everything back to factory spec an it should be all rock n roll

Good luck - choke circuirs can get over looked so don't forget those- keep us posted on how it works out ? BTW are valve clearances in spec ?

plungers cleaned, valves checked about 300 miles ago - so should be good

Does it matter which way the float valve goes on the float?

Nope, so long as the float measures 17mm from the sealing face of the float bowl to the top of the float with the carb held at 45 degrees so the spring-loaded needle isn't compressed.

Pay particular attention to the air jets in the mouth of the carbs and that the chokes move freely. The choke actually causes the slides to lift slightly, look in the top of the carb bodies for the opening.

Check the float needles to see if they are fucked.

Probably worth getting carb kits whilst you have it apart, particularly if you rely on the thing.

use your imagination and divide the circle into 8, and then count it round. it maybe helpful to use a small dab of tipex on both the head of the screw and adjoining face so that you know where you started.

7/8 ths would be nearly 1 full turn I believe, so it would really be nearly 2 full turns.

funny you should mention the battery.....

how long should it last at cranking the engine?

as couple of minutes of trying an it was dying (slowing), the battery lives on a optimate charger an has done since I bought it last year

will check resistance in coils tomorrow (coils were new (chinky) last year)

fed up Sad

Longer than a couple of mins, can you hook it up to a car battery? Chinky coils are cheap for a reason IMHO.

at a complete guess id say won't it depend on the current? But I guess a fuse would blow if it was to much.

They will not have the power to crank the motor, voltage yes, amperage no.

If the battery is a traditional (transparent casing) type, I would check the fluid levels. If it's a sealed one, I would hazard a guess that it was cheap and it shit.

Good news !

Regards checking teh spark -with these two plug coils both plugs on a given coil pair have to be in the circuit to get a decent spark

bad news.....

just went out on it, about 2 1/2 miles to garage for fuel (on choke @ 3k revs)

as i leave garage i turn choke off an it cuts out.

stick choke on full it starts but idling at 4k - so lower the choke until about 3k

as im riding towards home it starts to feel like its miss fire again, kinda like a stutter

Sad

reckon its just cold?
