rxs rough running with air filter

opened air box to clean filter to see there was none, took the foam that sits between the 2 sections of my socket set and jammed it in there to give some protection from crap and it run like utter shit, took cover off and it run better took filter out and it was perfect....

what do?

standard jets
standard carb
middle setting on needle.

it wasnt an over time thing, the foam was just chucked in temporarily as id just cleaned the carbs it was a massive difference with and without, without i could redline with it in i could open it to wot and id have to wait for it to get there spluttering like mad.

Some air filters don't just clean the air, they direct airflow...esp on Yamaha 2 strokes. I'd stick a new OEM element in before looking elsewhere.

..and, it may run fast without the air filter, but it probably won't be long before it self destructs Exclamation

Is the exhaust OK?

standard filter is just a sheet of foam so no direction.

exhaust is fine no blockages or anything wrong with it no leaks.

has pretty big holes in it and didnt take up much room, it was a massive improvement without it even without the airbox cover it run brilliantly which shows something is wrong, any other type of filter would allow less air making it run rough again

Did the foam block the air inlet into the airbox at all? It needs a completely free flow into the airbox before the air passes through the foam filter inside.

And yes, it does need oiling so the dirt sticks to it rather than working its way right through the foam...still...better to have foam than no foam!

i wont be using it without a filter once its sorted but it is running like shite with a random piece of foam that is less restrictive than a real filter would be so an oem filter it would run worse.

oil or no oil is irrelevant at the moment as it would infact reduce the airflow making it worse than it is now which is what i need to fix

Sounds like a previous owner removed the stock filter and had to make some adjustments to the carb to get it to run properly.

Putting a filter (any type of filter) back in has upset the fine balance between fuel and air, so more adjustments are needed.

Check that the carb is the right one and all the jet sizes are standard - if so, adjustment should get you running right - if not, you will have to decide whether to replace jets, get a standard carb, or experiment with different types of filter material.

I have had some success building custom filters, using vacuum cleaner bags, cooker hood filters, and fibreglass matting used for bodywork repairs. Expanded aluminium mesh (also used for bodywork repairs) can be used for support, to stop filter material being sucked into the engine.

To give you an idea of how little changes to airflow effect jetting, on my race TZR there's a little rubber "trumpet" which fits inside the airbox on the intake. It's just a rubber tube. Removing this means the main jets need upping from 230's to 330's ish, even retaining the filter foam.

Even after market filter foams can effect jetting, I tried cutting a replacement for my TDR from some generic stuff and it was way out. If your bike has been running without a filter, it should have been running very lean IF you're 100% sure it is on standard jetting.

standard jets, when i took carb apart and overhauled it the c clip was on the lowest setting so it was eating fuel but now ive moved it to the middle its still running fine.

whats standard on air screw any ideas? all the way in 2 and a half out?

Is there anything stopping this bit of foam from your socket set getting sucked into the carb inlet? Is it laying flat on part of the air filter? The OEM one's just a black piece of flat foam ja?

the airbox is a big box that runs paralel to the bike, the inlet is on the left side of the bike the outlet is on the right side at the front of the box, the foam filter sits against the inlet side.

As long as you're sure air can get through the foam ok, it should be good. Did you say you've had the jets out? Could you be missing a washer/seal? Does the tip of the air screw look OK? Pilot jet nice and clear?

yep had carbs apart all cleaned rebuilt, correct size jets no washers missing nothing appears to be wrong.

getting enough fuel just seems strangled of air.

Are the reed valves OK, no intake leaks engine to carb? It it can't create enough vacuum to the carb, it won't draw the correct fuel/sir mixture through it.

reeds are fine, no air leaks, its really weird it should run like shit as it is without a filter but it runs better

So when there's no filter, is it running right? Revving cleanly etc?

Rather than thinking of the engine as struggling the normal amount of air.....it could be that it's sucking in way too much fuel and just needs loads of air to compensate. Did you say you'd lifted the needle a notch? 'Tried it back at bottom?

Have you checked with a manual that the jets have the right washers etc....and in the correct order?

jets are all fine, i didn't lift the needle i lowered it as the c clip was on the bottom of the needle i put it back to factory.

without a filter it runs fine revs correctly idles correctly and revs drop back down fine.

with a filter it hesitates big time idles up an down and revs hang

Checked the slide is in the right way? On some Yamaha two strokes, it's possible to fit facing the wrong way.
