So it's been a while since I remembered to check my tyres and my gauge says they're much below recommended pressure. How much accuracy should you expect from cheaper tyre pressure gauges? I have the Halfords Long Nose and MCN says it is accurate to less than 1 psi
https://www.ride.co.uk/upload/Ride%20Magazine/Product%20test%20pdfs/9%20SEP08%20Pressure%20gauge%20test.pdf
Is it realistic to expect such a level of accuracy from a pretty cheap tool? Some people like my former instructor didn't trust them very much.

Simple job, ask your mates, and or your local garage, and use their gauges as well. There is a very small possibility, that all the tyre pressure gauges, you are going to try, are going to be inaccurate in the same way as yours.
I've got a very cheap gauge with accuracy of 0.1 BAR, which is accurate more than enough. And I have taken the measurements with this, and 2 other fuel stations compressors. Shell's compressor was a bit off, but then, it does not really matter.

I have a cheap digital one, similar to the picture above, and it normally lives in the boot of my car. Whenever I have to get a new tyre fitted at my local tyre fitter's, I check the tyre pressure with my gauge after they have checked it with theirs - because they have their's calibrated every 6 months.
It always reads the same, so that's good enough for me.
The gauges on my compressor, and my portable electric inflator are at least 10psi out. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

You should have only got a 120psi or 100psi
If you don't put more than 50psi in your tyres then a 60psi would do.
The lager the range the more inaccuracy can occur due to the travel of the Bourdon Tube.
They work like a coil spring and springs have differing rates under differing tensions.
i.e. A 60psi gauge will give much more precise readings of pressures around it's mid range 30-40 than a 160psi reading 30-40.
Just sayin'. |

Trade off between a cheap higher quality 1% 160psi gauge or a more expensive 2.5% 60/100. 5 quid delivered is quite fucking good Anyway 1.6 psi error is far more accurate than necessary for a tire and a bit pointless unless your also comparing temperature.
I also suspect the ride test was a load of made up bollocks.. compare the stated resolution against the measured accuracy |
