Hello everyone.

Was away on work so wasnt on much lately.
A quick question on the chain and sprockets.

Chain was getting loose, I got it tightened. However it has got loose again, and it looks like it wont tighten any more, does it mean I need to get a new set? anyone know somewhere not very expensive to get it done in London or buckinghamshire?

I have a Hyosung Aquila 125 by the way!

Sprockets might be ok, but it sounds like a new chain is definitely needed. Do you oil it regularly?
Over-tightening the chain can cause premature wear too.

If you are at the end of the adjustment then you need a new chain AND sprockets.
Mis-matching will accelerate wear in the new part you fit.

Are you sure the spindle bolt is tight enough?

In my experience, I usually only have to change the sprockets every other chain.

But yeah, need pics of sprockets to be able to advise. Thumbs Up

Unusual but not unheard of.
How many miles do you get out of a chain?

My mechanic frowns at chain only/sprockets only. Smile

I put a new chain on my S1000RR due to a Scotoiler issue. Sprockets were fine but chain had two tight links.
He wasn't happy but when he saw the bike he said fair enough.
The problem is they both wear equally or near enough equally.
So it is as worth changing all at the same time. you shouldf be able to get over 26k on a chain and sprockets with no problem.
If you have a scotoiler (that works) you can easy get 36k

Have you ever changed all together?

Fuck it... This thread is almost derailed so I may as well waffle on now. Very Happy

I change tyres two at a time. I have always found when the rear is gone the front is not far behind. For the sake of the hassle I do both. I don't like my bike to be off the road.

Last set were changed together and funnily enough I only gave them a good check over last week, as by normal standards they should be coming towards the end of their life but, the sprockets are showing little to no signs of wear and the chain has a fair bit left in it too. I have been cleaning it more frequently, as opposed to just lobbing more oil on though and I no longer use the dry chain lube because I came to the conclusion it wasn't as good.

It says:

Quote:

Count out 21 pins (20 pitches) on the chain and mea-
sure the distance between the two points. If the dis-
tance exceeds the service limit, the chain must be
replaced.


The Service limit lenght for your bike stated there is 265.5mm

If the chain has stretched longer its time to change the chain and the sprockets. The manual is clear when change the chain change the sporckets too. If you do not do that its false economy you are ruin new chain with old crappy sprockets. Less BCF wisdom more reading of the said manufacturer service manual.

Frankly if you can tighten a chain you should be able to change it yourself using the above manual. Given the fact you need riveting tools which will cost you some money and probably this will be only change on this bike you will do, its fine to find some garage to do that for you. It should cost around £60. Do not spalsh some money on fancy chains and sprockets. Its overkill for 125. Get decent and cheap chain and sprockets they will do perfect job given the fact your 125 has low power.

Also make sure the chain is not too tight the slack stated again in the above manual Very Happy is 20-30mm

I prefer to keep the top limit in your case 30mm. When you measure the slack sometimes (its ok) the chain has tighter spots. When you turn the wheel you measure the slack in the tightest spot ok? Its fine to have more slack on other spots. The slack is for the most tight spot on the chain.

I stand corrected and in fact removed the DID reference from my post.

Apparently for small bikes good DID chain kit is actually only £5 more expensive than cheap ones Very Happy
