PostPosted: 17:53 - 09 Feb 2016    Post subject: No spark and starter does not turn over when pushing start.. Reply with quote

Hi Guys, Im new to this forum so I'm still learning, I recently bought a 1993 XJ600 Diversion. I bought it for a bargain. Ive started to slowly clean it little by little.Ive changed the starter solenoid because the old one was not working. After this I'm facing two big problems , one of which, being that when I push the start button nothing happens apart form oil light, but when I use a screw driver and touch the both bolts on the solenoid, there is some sparks and the starter turns and tries to fire the engine up with no result. The next big problem is that when the starter turns over I get fuel and air but no spark at the plugs... Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

One of the cut out switches.

Either Killswitch, Clutch or Side Stand. Is the bike in gear?

The bike is in neutral and all the stands are up, I don't think it a kill switch problem to be honest. Thanks for the advice.

What Volts do you get at the battery?

Standing & when cranking?

When you say no spark. Is that holding a plug against the engine casing? or a guess because its not firing up.

Kill switch? Start to bypass all the switches to eliminate a faulty one.

One of your fuses is blown. The neutral light, horn, brake lights etc are on a different fuse to the ignition.
The oil light is an oil LEVEL light not oil pressure. It will light when cranking to prove the bulb works. If it lights any other time check your oil level.

Wiring diagram attached. The coils and the RUN switch are fed power by the red/white wire. That's the fuse which is blown.

Thanks guys for the advice, I will try these methods tomorrow, by the way I've checked all the fuses and they seem to be in good order.

Are there any other fuses apart from the one's behind the battery?

Check them with a meter, or try swapping two about. Check also the fuse holder to make sure the contacts aren't corroded.

If you have an alarm and the above checks out, suspect the alarm/immobiliser.

When you go to make a reply, scroll down a bit and click 'add an attachment' button.

Anyway, take your meter and check the voltage at the red/white wires at the coil with the ignition and run switch on.

Who said continuity? Check the voltage at the red and white wire.

What do you get from the battery.

Set on 20V
Red to red, Black to black.
Engine off & then cranking over?

Probed what switch?

What I'm asking you to do is this:

Find the coils
Remove the red & white wire from a coil.
Turn on ignition
Turn on stop switch

Turn your meter on and put the black probe on the battery minus and the red probe on plug. Make sure it reads 12v or thereabouts.

Now use the red probe to check BOTH sides of ALL of the fuses if you can get at them. They should all read 12v-ish on both sides with the fuse in. If any don't read 12 on both sides the fuse is blown.

Now use the red probe to measure the voltage at the red and white wire you took off the coil. It should be the same as the battery voltage, or a few tenths less. If it reads zero or very low you have no power coming from the red switch on the bars.
