Is my ECU toast?

So my bike (ZX6R B1H) cut out last week and wont start.

Recovered it home and managed to get it to throw out some fault codes...nine to be precise!

11 - Main throttle sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
12 - Inlet air pressure sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
13 - Inlet air temperature sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
14 - Water temperature sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
15 - Atmospheric pressure sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
21 - Crankshaft sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
23 - Camshaft position sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
31 - Vehicle-down sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
32 - Subthrottle sensor malfunction, wiring open or short

The bike cut out at 60 with total loss of power, all the electrics work fine, it tuns over but with no start. Took ages to get it show the fault codes, seems as though it only does it randomly which leads me to think of the ECU again.

The bike was running fine before hand and there is too many sensors failing for it to be a coincidence in my opinion.

found a thread with a 2008 zx6r with very similar issues to mine, he replaced the ecu and the bike fired up strait away.

Could mine be a similar fix?

That's a lot of faults, and yes it could be the ECU. £80 2nd hand off ebay because I bet you don't have a mate with the same bike to swap over and check?

Could be the ECU, or could be a disconnected multi-connector? Always check the cables first!

Do they have one of those shonky multi-earth connector things?

Or perhaps you fitted a tail tidy?

Some bikes have a hidden ?diagnostic? socket somewhere in the loom where a whole bundle of earth wires connect together into one earth wire. Thing is, they are in series so if one connection fails, everything upstream of it does too.

Was a particular problem in Blackbirds as I recall and caused odd/intermittant ECU/FI faults.

Yeah mine has a diagnostic socket, used it for getting the fault codes.

All you have to do is eath it to the bike but it was not doing after several trys, then randomly it worked and threw out the codes so i don't know if that had anything to do with it???

But cheers ill have a another check tonight

New ECU turned up and unfortunately it did not fix the fault.

Going to see if a motor electrician can help as I reached the limit on my electrical knowledge I'm afraid.

You have checked the main earths right?

Have you checked the fuses? is it sparking?

unconnect everything and then reconnect it

Check the - from battery, should also have one on the engine? Mines near the starter motor and got furry as f. Quick scuff with sandpaper and wd40 around it, chuck some grease lightly on it and reattach.

My R1 also had a multi plug that could corrode and cause random issues like lights just not working and funny temp readings.

Tonight I disconnected and cleaned all two of the earth wires and still not starting

Time to invest in a new loom or take it somewhere?

Hi Conzar, just a thought, it reminded me of an earlier post where someone installed a new engine, and couldn't get it started, when you got the new ECU, did you put the red key in to set up the immobiliser again, dont know if yours is configured that way but worth a try, if you got a red key , if it does you can reprogramme your black keys

Hello mate definitely worth a punt. I did on my zzr. In the end it turns out killswitch was faulty (i tried to fix by joining with wire before but thinner than original. Cdi needs to read a certain voltage or it thinks its being hotwired and wont start. So i just twisted wires together).

A new loom isnt too hard to fit. Just start at the arse end and work your way along. U may find it easier to unplug the old one a bit at a time and plug in new as you go.


50 quid is less than an hours labour charge from a garage. So worth a shot id say.
