2001 FZS600 Fazer

I decided it was time to change the pads, and upgrade to braided hoses whilst I was at it... treat her right and shell treat you right etc.

Boy was I wrong.

I'm now experiencing the joy I assume most Fazer owners experience at some point.

Seems the pistons are siezed to absolute fuck in the rear calliper. The rear brakes have always been a bit shitty and weak, I just assumed thats the way they were. Though looking at this I think its safe to say they just never really moved much due to corrosion.

Looking at this pic it also seems like theres random bits of o-ring/seal poking out from the piston, now Im no expert but that dont look right to me?

What the fuck has happened to cause those seals to be jammed out like that, and how do I fix this?

Conversely the front brakes and their sensible slot design and nice big drainage hole so they dont sit in a bath of salty road water for months, changed over in seconds Rolling Eyes

Do I even bother trying to fix the rear? Or do I just buy an FZ1 blue dot calliper for the rear?

It looks like so much corrosion has built up behind the seals that they have been forced out into that very small gap between the piston and the caliper body.

I had a similar problem with a caliper on a friends bike.I removed the caliper and worked on it on the bench, forcing the piston past the distorted seals.

A replacement caliper from eblag might be the best bet as it would be more expensive to buy new pistons and seals Thumbs Up

Are you in London or the West country?

You need to rebuild the whole caliper. Sounds hard, its not really though.

Spray a ton of brake cleaner in there first and keep pumping your rear brake (put a block of wood where the pads would normally be to stop one/both coming out straight away). until you get movement.

The seals are toast though, its because there is loads of dryed out crap in the seal ring that has expanded and forced your dust seal out.

The pistons actually look pretty good condition to me, you would have to see if there is any really bad pitting once you have cleaned them up though.

Time to youtube rebuilding motorcycle caliper Thumbs Up

Good luck!

Edit: good to see the bleed nipple came out and did not snap, tis a bastard when that happens.

buy a replacement caliper from ebay or a breakers, fuck trying to get that out, the time and effort won't be worth the cost of a replacement instead.

Replacement for my fz6 was £30

The "fuck that, buy a new one" argument does seem pretty strong to me, it looks like a total ballache to do it yourself at home! Especially as I dont have the facilities to split a caliper.

Its currently sitting in the freezer in a last ditch effort to hot/cold shock the corrosion free as per someone else's advice.

Though I've also been recommended this guy which seems worth a shot: https://www.mailorderrepairs.co.uk/ anyone used him before? Seems almost TOO cheap to me.

I'm in south London, near Croydon.

Getting a new one looks more economical too, the seals kit alone seems to be similar, if not more expensive than a new caliper from a breakers.

Make sure the new one looks good condition though mate, would suck to get another one on there with a stuck piston again...

The only complicated part of the rebuild is getting the pistons out if they are completely stuck, everything else is piss easy mate.

Is there any movement in them at all?

Do this.

It's a time vs cost thing.

I spent £25 on a replacement caliper for the zxr400 instead of spending ages trying to swap the pads out on the existing buggered to fuck one.

If you rebuild, and even buying a replacement (unless refurbished) you'd probably want to rebuild anyway, this is one of the best tools in my toolbox. Hasn't failed me yet!
