Yamaha SR125 - Electric Starter Issue

Can anyone help?

I insert key
I press the starter, and a demented bumble bee buzzes around under the seat, no ignitiion...

Suggestions are welcome, as are PDF versions of the haynes manual!

HELP!

Have you checked the battery? If it's buzzing as opposed to turning that's the first place I'd look.

Tried the choke... not that....

It has been standing for about 3 weeks....

How exactly could I check for sparks? How could I "bump Start" it?

I have a car, could it be like jump starting a car with jump leads?

NO, dont jump start from a car. A car (dependant on model) is 12, 125s are generally 6volts. You could have some interesting times jumpstarting from a car.


To bump a bike, its exactly the same as a car. Stick it in first, pull the clutch in, roll it down a slope. Let the clutch out, slowly. Make sure the ignition is on, as well as the fuel tap, put the choke on.

Repeat the rolling bit until it sparks, then pull the clutch in again. If all goes well it should tick over. Dont open the throttle or the chances are you'll flood it. Its a 125 remember!


To check if its sparking, remove the plug, reconnect it to the lead, and wedge it onto the engine. Try starting the engine, as normal (it aint gonna work! ), if its sparking you'll see an arc of electricty jump between the contacts on the spark plug. If it doesnt its either an electronics problem, a duff spark plug or a duff lead.

how old is your SR, mine is 2001 on a 51 plate and no problems...yet...except a rear tyre...and brake pads...and oil change...

My SR 125 is an S Reg...not sure of the exact year..

I am thinking of investing in a battery charger....

checking on the web, a replacement battery for an SR125 is a 12V variety...

Id imagine that its 6, check the battery. Depending on the number of cells, IIRC 12volters have 6, 6volters have 3.

Bump starting is better carried out in second than first as you don't have to push it so hard, just a little faster. Even then I still managed to slide the back wheel letting the clutch out pushing it in second. It started fine though.

I'm pretty sure that the SR125 is a 12 volt bike though. 6V systems are a little outdated nowadays.

I have removed the battery and checked.

My "battery" knowledge isn't the best, to be honest, but looking at it, it has 6 yellow bits on the top, which I assume is where you fill it up? Therefore my assumption is that this is a 12V battery?!?

Also, do you think that the acid that leaked all over my garage floor when I titlted the battery on the site is a problem >!< (JOKING - I know it's a problem, and it did seriously leak Acid!)

Er, leaking acid is a problem. For one its flammable, if its sitting near your engine, you're gonna be a 125 fireball if it catches.

Nevermind about all the 'benefits' to your health it has, like, for example, death.

Look into a new battery mate.

I tried to bump it (lack of experience on that front)...

I used the advise given in the forums, put it into first, ignition on, choke on, don't pull throttle....ran down the hill, release clutch slowly and nothing...

I think the battery is so dead that it won't even jump start - the lights don't even come on anymore, although they did when I first had the problem.

Can anyone confirm the 12V vs 6V question for me? Considering the acid leaking scenario, I need to invest in a new one!

Go with 12volt mate, if your still worried, take the headlight apart and see what it says. If 12v, go with 12v.

Okay....

Bought myself a 12V battery charger, realising that the acid leaking from the battery was from the "inbuilt" overflow device on the actual battery....

Charged the battery
Put it into the bike
Ignition on
Press starter - Bumble bee gone, starts to turn over...WOOT

Tried again....realised that choke really needs to be out for this to work....sounded more promising (Can't make chug chug noises on here very well)

Tried again....battery dying now....hum...

AH!...Helps if the petrol is turned to the on position...

Tried again....battery dead...DOH!

Recharged battery.....plugged it in, choke, petrol, ignition...starter....

After about 30 seconds of pain....VROOOM>....VROOM>......

Me is well happy. I would just like to thank everyone for the assistance.

Anyone else think bikes should come with a kickstart as a backup?
