a couple of time this week, i've gone to start me bike and whats happened is as follows....

1) de-arm imob
2) key in ignition
3) turn ignition on
4) press the starter button

it is on point 4 that the electrics for the bike completely cut out, no dash lights, no starter, NOTHING

give the bike a swift slap on the seat, " drivers not passenger's" and electrics come back on.

now back to point 1 threw 4 and one of two thing happens

either the bike starts or it all cuts out again

now this problem could happen a few times in a row, and then it decides the electrics will stay on, and once its running its fine.

i doesnt cut out or anything (touch wood)

so tomorrow im gonna take the seat off and check connections ect.....

and i just wondered if anyone can offer any input into what might be happening

or if someone has had a simular experience, what it turned out to be

any ideas welcome

thanx fellow bikers

Hi

If it is like the early 1990s CBR then just in front of the seat there is a starter relay that also has the main fuse for the rest of the electrics. These fail and are not cheap (~£75). Worth checking out once you have checked all the other fuses and the battery contacts.

All the best

Keith

You'll be wanting a Haynes or Clymer manual for your bike. Invaluable things really, especially if they stop you from making expensive mistakes.

Hi

The relay was about 6" in front of the battery. Has a couple of large leads to it (one from the battery, one to the starter motor) and a connector with several wires. Also has a cover for a large fuse on it.

Not sure how you test it, but we found it when Ants bike would not start one night.

All the best

keith

I agree with Kieth on this one. I have has several of these things let-go. If you follow the big fat wire from the battery positive, it will be attached to the top of the starter solenoid by a big bolt.

On a lot of bikes, all the power to the rest of the bike goes through a connector block on the side of this solenoid. It may not be a fault on the solenoid itself, could just be corrosion in the terminal block or fuse holder that attaches to it. Pull the block apart and have a good look, give the wires that attach to it a bit of a wiggle to see if they are about to break off (if you can pull a wire out of a connector block without exerting yourself, it was too loose)

The solenoid should make an audible 'click' when you press the starter button.

Could also be a loose connection or loose fuse somewhere else in which case you will just have to go through and look for it, start at the solenoid and work forwards.

just to let you know i took the seat off today and started at the barrery and found that even though the battery earth screw was tight, the conector was moving around, so i've added a washer and now the connection is all nice and tight.

hopefully this has cured it, i will fine out this week, to and frow from work

fingers crossed

thanx for you help fellow bikers

keep it on the blackstuff

FWIW, I once had the starter on my trike fail to operate every so often. Even though the big heavy connector and nut were tight, when I took it apart there was a big buildup of carbon and assorted cr4p. Cleaned it off and everything was ok.
