Hi there,

my CG125 will do about 50mph on the speedo top.
and you have to rag it in every gear to get it to go anywhere,,,i heard these things CRUISE at 55 and do 60-65 ?

well at 50 mine is making alot of racket and theres nothing left in it.

besides the tappets needing set i cant find anything wrong with it

is this normal ?

how do CG's usually perform ?
its a 1991 model

CG's aren't built for speed, but reliablity. They can't be 'tuned' as they run on a 4T engine.

by means of an internal combustion engine Laughing

From my limited knowledge of them i found that the one i was riding could get upto 55-60 at a push but this was a newish riding schools bike.

Well any engine can be tuned, but i don't want to tune my cg.

I just want a rough guide on how they perform so that I can tell weather mine maybe needs to be looked at.

thanks

They're relatively indestructable, they tend to get thrashed a lot because they never go very quickly. If you keep feeding it fresh oil every 1000-1500 miles and make sure it's not running too rich, and that it's carburettor isn't gummed up then there's not a lot else that can go wrong. The Haynes recommended valve tappet clearances are pretty loose and it'd be unsurprising were they done up to zero clearance. 0.03 mm or something is perhaps best.

Watch out for a rumbling and heavy vibration in the footpegs. If you get that, it's likely that your main bearings are giving way. At the end of the day, it's a four stroke 125, it's not meant to go quickly, the 93 (I think) model my Mum has in the garage did about 55 tops (before it knackered a bearing and killed it's spark plug).

Depends how heavy you are, if there is a headwind and if you are going up a hill.

Given someone of average weight on a level straight with no headwind then 65mph should not be an unreasonable expectation.

I would get myself a workshop manual and do all the stuff listed under a major service/tune up then see how you go.

I found the newer ones to be slightly slower than the older 1990ish model after leaving my instructor behind in a NSL during training. Laughing

I dont think theres anything to worry about mate. Ive got a 97 model, and that doesnt seem to want to go any higher than 50 at all.

unless we have a similar problem Confused
But i doubt it very much. Bullet proof engines! Wink

Just think, would you rather be going at 50 all day on a CG? or 80 now and then on a wanked up RS? Mr. Green

Well...fuk knows what's wrong with it.
Mine isn't old, and I am not a mechanic ..so.... Shocked

My CG is an 04 model..and it does 60 cruising nicely...and 75 top end.
I am not tiny, nor large..sort of normal frame woman...and it is true...in bad winds it does slow the bike down and some noise and shaking may occur, ..if it was STRONG wind, and up-hill, about 65 max..yes.

Should do 60 quite easily, but you do need to rag the tits off them to get it there. Top speed seems to be about 65 for the older ones and 70 ish for the newer engine.

You may find that oiling the speedo cable will give you an extra 5-10mph. It used to on my old 125 Wink

What I'm trying to say is the speedo on those bikes was designed in the 1970s. Back then speedos were little more than a guide at best, wildly innacurate at worst. You are all probably doing exactly the same speed on your CG125s. It is a fair bet to say that when you hear the valves bounce, it will be doing somehwere between 65 and 70mph

Hi there,

This crossed my mind, as I was going through a 30 zone at an indicated 30mph but was sure i was going faster.

I just put this down to the feel of a different bike.

Anyway; thanks for the replies,

I'm not really concerned with speed its just to gauage how well mine is set up.

Thanks

Jp

ok... take back what i said about my top speed being 50.

Just got 60 out of it. Laughing

All you need is a nice long straight, good clutch control and a lack of wind.

Oh, and make sure you really use ALL the gears have to give, especially 3rd.

Good luck Very Happy
