First of all, jumping a bike battery with a car battery doesn't create any problems. I've done it numerous times.
If there isn't a car (or jump leads) nearby, you can jump start a bike by:
Rolling it along a straight road (preferably downhill) in neutral and then when you've collected enough speed (about 4-5 mph) kick it into first gear and the bike should jump into life. If it doesn't work the first time, try a few more times. If it still doesn't start, then find a car to jump start it with.
Good Luck. ____________________ I don't hate Rocky Balboa...I PITY the fool...And I will destroy any man who tries to take what I got! |

didn't quite understand that part, would 2nd be safer? You don't think it should be done in first then I take it? ____________________ -=[Sam/b]=- cx500's the only way to travel, we do it in style just like jimmy saville

The higher up you get the less likely your back wheel will just lock up, and in top gear, when the bike does start (you'll need to have the throttle open a baw hair) youre not going to go anywhere cus ure engine will be at low revs, just grab a fistful of clutch, rev, and take for a SMOOTH ride ____________________ Will work for petrol

I remember someone jump started a car from another vehicle and he was warned do not attempt it, but he shrugged it off and we stood back watching him ask the driver of the other vehicle to start up his articulated lorry, yes an artic !
Suddenly you could smell the waft of freshly burning insulation from through out all of the electrics of the car.... None the less he had to call out a recovery vehicle to get it towed to the nearest garage for major rework job. When the recovery guy turned he to walk around the corner so as not be seen laughing his head off !
He spent a pretty penny trying to get that car fixed because everything electrical was wasted !
Moral of the story is do not hook up to another vehicle that exceeds your own voltage output. |

Jumping is perfectly safe if done propperly UNLESS (afaik) you are unfortuneate enough to have a fuel injected bike or any complex computer controlled gubbins.. spikes kill these reguarly (spoke to a bmw owner who had just payed £800 for a new ecu after a botched jump start).. not allways but be carefull! There are "ecu savers" on the market which will protect from this sort of thing...
If you jump from a car DO NOT start the car.. excess voltage will fry things.. Vans+ anything biger might run from 24volt systems, as mentioned is not a good thing...
If you jump from another battery or car or whatever...
Get the jump lead + and connect to the bike + terminal
Clip the other end to the donor battery + terminal
Clip the - lead to the - terminal on the donor
Then clip the - lead to the - on the battery or a suitable grounding point on the frame.
As soon as you get it going remove in reverse order
Bump starting is very easy runing jumps are not needed...
Ignition on, stand by the left of the bike, second gear,
hold the clutch in, run forward with the bike till your going a decent speed and smoothly let the clutch out (shouldn't need to be let all the way out),
when it catches pull the clutch back in and give it some revs (dont go mad, brake covered) to keep it alive,
(now you have it going you can stop running ) when its runing and not going to die (warmed up, if it was then it will be ok straight away obviously) put it back in neutral and get on when your ready... (make sure you have the front brake covered all the time your doing this!)
Dead easy... done this with my cg, a mates 125, and my old cx... ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |
