Probably a bit of a daft question, but what exactly is clutch slip? Not as in slipping the clutch when moving slowly, but as in "I was accelerating away and the clutch started to slip"?

My RS125 needed new clutch plates when I got it, it would slip under accelleration. You would feel the bike begin to lose steam but the revs would start going ape shit and then if they bit the bike would surge a bit! HTH.

caused by:

worn clutch plates
ill adjusted clutch cable
fully synfectic engine oil (can happen on some bikes, or on bike using replacement EBC clutch plates)

a clutch kit is about £40 which would include 6-7 friction plates and possibly replacement springs (not really needed). changing the plates on most jap bikes is quite easy with a bit of common sense.

Without trying to be cocky, its when your clutch slips. Feels strange when it happens, which on classic bikes is quite often. In gear, open throttle, revs go up but your speed doesnt, or not as much as the engine anyway. Basically its when the clutch can not handle the amount of power/torque that the engine is trying to put through it.

Is it like when the bike slips out of gear?

Because i think this is what happening to my bike.

It happens every time i go out on it, i'll be riding along, in forth say, and then the revs will go apeshit, ill pull in the clutch, then select the gear and it will be fine again.

It did while i was slowly riding behind a rs125, he thought i wanted to race him Embarassed

Could be a possibility mate but it would do it under load in every gear if your clutch was on its way out!

This is what made me post this topic actually as I've noticed this happening a couple of times now, usually if I'm accelerating 'enthusiastically'! Thanks for the advice everybody, I know actually know what people mean when they talk about clutch slip now. I'd guessed it was something along these lines, but thought it was worth checking. Thumbs Up

Hi

As above. Tends to happen more in the high gears, up hill, full throttle, etc.

If it is doing it in a particular gear it tends to suggest something else.

All the best

I found out the clutch was slipping on the busa, when I decided to show some Merc AMG that he couldn't out accelerate a busa, the clutch slipped then bit, producing a rather spectacular wheelie.

One way I test for clutch slipping is to trundle along slowly, put it into third then crack the throttle fully open (be sure to cover the rear brake in case it does the above)

I have a cbr 600 and it doesnt like powerwheelying in first even when you rock the revs (take it to 10k, snap throttle shut then fully open), let alone straight out power delivery.

I should be so lucky to have to worry about flipping it from a 3rd gear rollon Crying or Very sad

Damn litre+ bikes Evil or Very Mad

Nah, what I meant was having the clutch slip and then bite again, gives the same effect as clutching up a wheelie.

Oooooh... Still... the cbr doesnt clutch up in second let alone third...

Again with hating litre plus bikes. Altho i do recall a certain small wheelbased ktm 250 two stroke that wheelied VERY well in third so perhaps its just lardy 600's

Nah, that sounds like your bike is jumping out of gear.

Clutch slip is a bit more subtle and usually starts in top gear, spreading to the lower gears as it gets worse.

I would liken the effect to riding along in top then pulling in the clutch lever ever so slightly, the revs rise but the bike goes no faster. It sounds like engine noise recorded on a casette player that has started to chew up the tape.

You can get the effect by maladjusting your clutch so it never properly quite engages fully. It's fine until you get to a hill or unless you accelerate vaguely enthusiastically. I could explain it in technical detail if you want, but I can't be arsed. Smile

It's not exactly a hard concept to grasp anyway, mainly just to do with the clamping force and the coefficients of static and dynamic friction. Other factors are the amount of torque you're applying to the clutch, the difference between engine and wheel speeds, the amount of meat left on the plates, and the adjustment mechanism.

Are hydraulic clutches self-adjusting? I'd have thought so. Thinking

That really depends what bike you've got.

New clutch plates and springs for my gixxer cost about £115.

Then factor in an oil change, oil filter, and new gaskets, and you're looking at about £150.

I had genuine Suzuki parts though, not EBC.

Also, I didn't pay for them, so not overly fussed. Was a birthday present.

Nice link though Thumbs Up
