Everyone has there own way so you aint gonna get a straight answer.... But since its only the piston that needs bedding in just take it easy for like 1500km to let the seals set in then just carry on riding like you would..

You can go from one extreme to the other, I thought a couple of hundred miles (300km) without putting loads of strain on the engine would have been more than enough?

I found this which was recommended after a complete rebuild of a off road ATV.

ATV OnLine Tech Sheet
by Colin Bylund, Editor ATV OnLine

Two Stroke Engine Break In

After engine has been installed and all fluids replenished (coolant/water, gear oil etc) you must then break the engine in properly. Improper break in results in lower reliability and possible engine seizures.

Use the gas and oil mixture ratio that you intend to run after the break in. Check all fluid levels periodically during the break in. Check the carb jetting periodically during the break in.

Part 1

Idle: Start engine and let idle with a fan blowing on the radiator to help it cool properly. Let idle for 15 minutes.
Cool Down: Shut engine off and let engine cool for a minimum of 30 minutes.
Idle: Repeat first step.
Cool Down: Repeat second step.

Part 2

Note: Be careful not to put unnecessary strain on the motor during the break in. Do not climb large hills or go through deep mud. If possible use a mild treaded tire. If you are on the sand do not use sand paddles.

Ride: Ride for 15 minutes varying your RPM not to exceed 50% of normal riding pace.
Cool Down: Shut engine off and let cool for a minimum of 30 minutes.
Ride: Ride for 15 minutes varying your RPM not to exceed 60% of normal riding pace.
Cool Down: Shut engine off and let cool for a minimum of 30 minutes.
Ride: Ride for 15 minutes varying your RPM not to exceed 70% of normal riding pace.
Cool Down: Shut engine off and let cool for a minimum of 30 minutes.
Ride: Ride for 15 minutes varying your RPM not to exceed 80% of normal riding pace.
Cool Down: Shut engine off and let cool for a minimum of 30 minutes.
Ride: Ride for 15 minutes varying your RPM not to exceed 90% of normal riding pace.
Cool Down: Shut engine off and let cool for a minimum of 30 minutes.
Ride: Ride for 15 minutes varying your RPM not to exceed 100% of normal riding pace.
Cool Down: Shut engine off and let cool for a minimum of 30 minutes.

About 400 miles on my ns125-r, just had new piston and rings and cylinder gasket put on, and honda shop said 400miles.

So most bikes are probably the same.

Baz. Thumbs Up

While the ATV procedure might work, I would think that for the first 200 miles or so, don't exceed 5000 rpm. Use varying engine speeds.
For the next 500 miles, increase the maximum engine speed gradually.

but it keeps overheating, i think it may be the result of a nakered thermostat

well, you really have to be carefull, can see a nasty sieze coming up!!!

I know its frustrating to hold back the revs, like me(just had new piston in), but if you value the bike, well its up to you.

Looking at £200 upwards otherwise, unless your lucky!!

I basically run in over 500km gradually increasing the revs.

exat figures don't matter, but the more slowly you take things the more likely you are to not break anything, and to spot a problem before it causes serious damage
