Its the part that your rear wheel fastens to and roughly just behind the engine it will be on a pivot...with a rear shock attatched to the frame and swinging arm.
Depending on what bike you have, your rear shock will be enclosed up in the frame, or exposed towards the rear of the bike.
Here is a pic of a swinging arm

Not having actually bought a new chain yet and as it is only a couple of quid or so to get one riveted together, do they also come with a split link so you could at least ride down to the shop? ____________________ You watching this rubbish?

I think just about every chain has a split link because no matter how hard you tried, you'd never get it on.
The people that can rivet them will only shorted it down and rivet it back to the split link, then you use the split link to get it on your sprockets and then fix it together via a removable rivot in the split link.
Please correct me if i am wrong

While not wishing to upset/have a go at anyone see this pic of a split link. Most of you know already but I didn't want anyone to look at the prevoius picture and get confused about what is included in a split link.

I dont see how you can have bent your chain really, they move an awful lot across the whole travel. Not that its not possible mind. Id check that your rear end alignment is right before shelling out for a chain of that price.
Also this might sound like a stupid question, but if some blind cager wiped you out, why arent you riding a nice shiny courtesy bike while his insurance company repairs your bike at their cost? ____________________ Bluespark Automotive - Diesel Tuning for Performance and Economy |

the guy that cut me just drove off without a worry. the cars behind saw it but no one got his plate, he was driving so fast.
the chain came off the sprocket and got stuck in the swing arm, and as me and some helpful driver were trying to move the bike off the carridgeway it just made the chain worse.
then the recovery driver came and we had to pic the back end up and push onto recovery truck which made it even worse cause the chain was stick in the swingarm bit..
the rear wheel is aligned okay but chain is pysically bent kind of twiseted. it has not snapped. will take a pic tom once i get the feelings back in my hands!
can i just buy a chain and fit it or do they all comes with the sprockets?

Id personally recommend replacing sprokets with a new chain.
Simply because normally it comes to be that chains and sprockets wear at a similar rate-a wearing chain will cause the front spoket to 'hook' (see this pic). Ive had one where the actual spines on the sprocket ended in a sharp point (I wondered why my new chain only lasted a month )
Look in your owners manual for a more exacting spec for your sprockets, they should have nice and smooth edges.
Total pricing for DIYing it:
Front Sprocket: M&P JT Sprocket £7.00
Rear Sprocket: M&P JT Sprocket £11.25
Chain: Here I draw a blank, M&P have got a Gold X-Ring for £70 (I wouldnt pay that much!) Here
Chain Riveter: M&P 'Heavy Duty Chain Splitter' £19.99 (questionable quality for that kind of money, but should do the job)
As you can see, even if you went for the Gold X-Ring chain, it would cost you a LOT less than you were quoted. Bear in mind that you would need a rather large (24+ mm) socket and 1/2" drive to get the front sprocket off, and the rear will be a bitch as well. Probably coated with enough chain lube that any tool you apply will just come straight off.
DIY-it, battle scars are always fun! ____________________ Past: GZ 125 K4 Marauder, VL 125 LC Intruder, FZS 600 Fazer. Present: GSF 600 N K3 Bandit, GSX-R 600 X(soon)

No need for 24mm+ socket then. Why was he quoted £150 for fitment and supply of ~£70 worth of metal?

If you can't just fix it yourself for less than a hundred quid, then don't forget about the insurer of last resort, the MIB.
MIB was established in 1946 as a private company limited by guarantee for the purpose of entering into Agreements with the Government to compensate the victims of negligent uninsured and untraced motorists. Every insurer underwriting compulsory motor insurance is obliged, by virtue of the Road Traffic Act 1988, to be a member of MIB and to contribute to its funding
| Quote: | What are the Untraced Drivers' Agreements?
These agreements between the Secretary of State for the Environment and Transport and MIB explain the precise circumstances under which an application from a victim of untraced motorist will be paid.
In general terms, the 1972 agreement specifies that MIB will make an award for compensation to the victim of a negligent untraced motorist in respect of personal injuries only, where such injuries are caused by the use of a vehicle which is required to be insured by law.
The 1977 agreement simplifies, for certain cases, the procedures detailed under the 1972 agreement.
The 1996 agreement consolidates the 1972 and 1977 agreements, updates references to statute and introduces a further requirement that to be eligible for compensation the applicant must have reported the accident to the police within a reasonable period. The 1996 agreement applies in respect of accidents occurring on or after 1 July 1996. The 2003 agreement applies in respect of accidents on or after 14 February 2003 and consideration will be given to property damage subject to the accident being reported to the police within 5 days or as soon as reasonably possible and the offending vehicle is identified. Claims will be subject to a £300 excess |
As well as damage to your bike, remember to claim for each and every painful scratch or bruise. I'm sure something must hurt, just a little bit at least. People often dismiss a slight muscular ache a short time after the accident but it often gets worse before it gets better. That way you will get enough back to pay for your bike after the excess - the MIB don't like paying for property damage anyway but will fork out for injuries. Remember to tell the police about the accident (preferably within 24 hours) and let them know about any (potential) injuries you have. Get your legal cover working for you, if you have it, otherwise try one of the free sites such as Rider Support. ____________________ Current bike: Kawasaki Z750S |

The GPZ not got a centre stand? Thats all you really need.
It WONT cost you £150, as I pointed out total cost for sprockets, chain & tool was 90, which included £70 of chain-over board IMHO, unless its a sportsbike I wouldnt put a Gold XRing on my bike! Standard XRing yes, gold no.
Your local bike shop should do chain-on-a-roll at a much better price, roll chain tends to be stronger as well. ____________________ Past: GZ 125 K4 Marauder, VL 125 LC Intruder, FZS 600 Fazer. Present: GSF 600 N K3 Bandit, GSX-R 600 X(soon)
