Hello,

My MOT is due at beginning of september, and i was wondering what it has to pass..to pass? make sense? I have a suzuki fr50,(1981) so its quite a simple bike. The lights work on dyno, so sometimes you cant really see the indicators-would that be a problem? Also my brake light only comes on when you press the foot brake, not the front brake. I think the light is suppose to come on for front but i cant get it to work? And finally, i have a wire( behind battery cover) that is currently been partially held together with tape(It is just that one end of the male/female things has fell off.)...any issues there.

Many thanks for your help!
Liam

6 volt electrics! Ouch!

If your rear brake light doesn't work it will fail. Indicators need to flash and be visable, or again, it will fail.

How you crimp your wires together is not an issue, as long as it works. But for the sake of a few pence for some connectors, i'd get it sorted. Or at least solder it and tape over if you must.

Just be honest with yourself, look over the bike and think, is it roadworthy!?.... Brakes, steering, suspension, exhaust, ELECTRICS. Take 15 mins and check it over, it will save you £30 odd quid for a re-test! Thumbs Up Wink

it does work, but only for the rear brake.

As my bike works on dyno they are only properly visible with high revs.I dont know what will be the "rules" regarding this. As it has passed its other MOT'S.

As for being road worthy i believe it is. I recently had front brake pad replaced- although it isnt fantastic it works good.

As for the exhaust- what must pass with that. Is it just noise and emmisions?
Thanks
Liam

Sorry, yes, same applies for front brake.

Sounds like it will be fine.

With the exhaust, it need to be in good condition, no blowing, secure and with noise, should be no louder than a standard one. Althouh I think it all depends on the person testing it.

Thumbs Up

The things that catch you out are ususally less obvious like wheel bearings or steering head.
From your list of problems it's the front brake not triggering the brake light most likely to fail you.
You might just convince them that they were all like that from new Wink

A 'friendly' back street bike shop might be more inclined to give a little leeway bearing in mind you aren't going to be thrashing up the motorway at 90mph.

well, i have a mate who is good with electrics so ive asked him if he can have a look at my electrics. Also i work next door to a motorcycle shop and they know me. So im going to pop in this afternoon at before work and see what they say. There's one guy in there with exactly the same bike, so he should be a good help!

As for wheel bearings and steering head- can i check them in any way?

It is old, therefore you dont need a front light brake switch, so that's ok.

If it is made before something like (don't quote me on this) 1982, you don't need indicators either.

But if they're fitted, they must work.

As it was made in 1981, you only need to have the brake light coming on with the rear brake. BUT if there is a switch on the front brake lever, it must work.

If the flashers don't work convincingly enough, take them off or tape them up, again, on a 1981 moped, there is no requirement for flashers. Most places are aware that you need to rev these things up in order for the flashers to work.

Not familiar with an FR50, is it that one that looks like a Honda cub? If so, I bet they also copied the silly pressed steel frame. Have a good check up under the back mudguard where it meets the petrol tank for corrosion, this is a common MOT fail on the Hondas.

Tap round all the spokes on the wheels with a spanner. If any of them make a dull noise instead of a musical ping, it needs tightening.

Your lights and flashers should be fine, you can get brilliant lights from 6v and they will know that.
Mine just passed on its 2nd time as the headlight alignment wasnt set right and my rear brake light sticks on sometimes due to sloack front brake lever.
Some places are just picky. i knew the guy who would be testing the bike before it went in so i knew it would fail Thumbs Down
