finally got my Sprint steering damper today, fitted it no problem,

got the the part where it says in on the instructions to set the bars to full lock to the left, then push the steering damper body all the way to the right until it meets the mounting point.

did it, clamped the body into place........................ and the f*cking thing won;t give me full lock to the right!!! it seems that the shaft of the damper is too short!

pain in the f*cking arse

pics, full lock to the left, as much lock to the right as i can get.

any idea's?

on the box that the damper came in one of the box's is ticked 50mm, other ones are 70, 100, 120, 140, 160mm whats this mean?

cheers

You need a longer damper, if thats a 50mm you need the 70mm or maybe even the 100mm

Siggi's right, you may get more span from the damper clamp - just slacken it off slightly so it can move relatively freely and then nip it up - see if you get the same span from the opposite lock.

Look on the bright side, at least your bars won't be able to go from lock to lock at 160 any more.

ive set it up so i get equal amount of lock both sides of the bar now.

had an email from the seller stating that a 70mm is required and i've been sent a 50mm soooo i'll have to post it off now.

best money ive ever spent though, had a quick go today and it's transformed the SRAD's handling Cool

yup they did, lock the steering to the left, slide the body all the way to the right and leave a 1mm gap Very Happy, tighten clamps, job done

*edit*

Siggi you might be gettin it a bit wrong here. not all steering damper bodies are clamped bang in the middle.

I take it that's an SRAD Gixxer? Don't they come with a steering damper as standard? Or was it just from the K series?

Man, those look fucked-up to me. Are they working around having out-of-whack geometry or something? Or are they "How Not To Do" pictures? Assuming all the mounting-points are central, how can it be that the body & clamp need to be off-center to each other? It makes absolutely no sense at all. Confused

Oh yes it does my non-mechanically mind friend.

The yoke brace will only be central on the damper body if the offset frame bracket sticks out to the side exactly half the length of the damper rod and rose joint centre.

Siggi, the location of the main body is irrelevant providing that you have full range of movement for the handlebars.

The instructions of mounting it at full lock are correct, in that they give you full range of movement in the direction of the lock you start with, and providing the slide rod is long enough, will also give you maximum movement to the opposite lock.

Prividing the slide bar is the correct length, mounting things in a central location *should* work, but it's not guaranteed.

Why's it not garaunteed? If the rod is the correct length, and all mounting points are central to the bike's longitudinal axis, the damper's body should be perfectly able to be centrally clamped.

The body should be clamped at the exact centre of the slide rod.

However, the slide rod is not necessarily central to the bike. It all depends on the mount point for the damper. Haven't you seen a damper that fits down the side of the frame and bolts onto one of the forks?

If the damper is fitted off centre, then it'll still work just the same. The body will be clamped off centre with respect to the bike, but the body will still be central on the slide rod when the front wheel is also central.

Make sense now?

Just cos the damper clamps at the front of the tank, and the mount point is central, doesn't mean that the slide rod is exactly central.

If the slide rod isn't central, then the body will have to be clamped off-centre to the bike too, so that it is central on the slide rod.

Nothing more to say on the matter.

Not true.

The arm doesn't have to position the slide rod so that it is central on the bike for the damper to work correctly. The only benefit of a central rod is asthetics.

Or Sprint decided to be tight-arses and try to get as few sizes as possible to fit as many types of bike as possible.

That is exactly the situation I'm talking about.

Going back to the start of the argument you said "You've done something wrong if it's not clamped central"

We said "There's nothing wrong with an off-centre clamping, if that is what's required for correct functionality"

Just because YOUR damper fits exactly central and is symmetrical, doesn't mean that they all do.

I was simply explaining that mechanically it doesn't have to be central, it's just for asthetics.

And yes, companies are tight arses, and will manufacture the least things they have to to make the most money.

If the mount for a GSXR600 fits a GSXR1000, but needs a different length rod, then dispach with a different rod and have the user mount it off-centre. Works perfectly, user is happy, company make more money, what's the problem?

Mount the body centrally on the slide rod and you'll always be onto a winner.

As for the clamp on the body, is down to the fitting mechanism for each particular bike.

Some have to be mounted offcentre due to the shape of the tank. Some tanks are too high, so would get in the way of a solid mount. These have a jointed mount which makes the clam sit way off centre on the body of the damper.

Loads of pictures in THIS POST above which show your theory to be wrong.

Not that it really matters.

Bogging off home now. Will post a picture of my steering damper later. Not sure if it's mounted centrally or not. Smile

Waddaya know, the body is clamped off centre on my gixer, yet it all works perfectly well!
Maybe the fact that the body is central on the slide rod, yet offcentre to the rest of the bike really doesn't matter after all! Wink

Yes theres a very very good reason why the rod is that short. So when you crash the rod doesn't spear your knee which can be a problem with dampers mounted there. Laughing
