External Hard Drive Problem.

Being a sensible sort of fellow, I decided to invest in an external hard drive for back up.

Yesterday went to back up some music and pictures - by switching it on and whilst my PC recognises a Hard Drive in 'G' is fails to recognise it as a Seagate EHD and I get a message saying would I like to format the drive now? As I have already transferred loads of data across I guess that isn't a good idea.

It does the same in other USB hubs and I've tried disconnecting other devices potentially using the same hub.

Any ideas anyone?

Check if it exists under Device Manager. If it does then remove it. Make sure unplugged then reboot. When started plug it in again.

It exists as 'Drive G' not as a Seagate External Hard Drive.

As map says, remove it from the DM, whatever it's called, and reboot the system. When you plug it back in, with any luck it will install the driver properly.

Right I tried that - it still doesn't work - it recognised it for a moment - then in 'My Computer' it came up Disc Drive G & still won't open!

Are there any repair kits for a Seagate EHD (250gb) - it's less than 4 weeks old!!

do what they said above but when you plug it b ack in put it straight into a USB port and not a hub.

This might be a dump question, but you haven't formatted the external drive in a format that the PC can't read have you? I'm not sure how you could, but I guess it's possible?

What's the Drive showing up as in Device Manager in the system tab of the Control Panel now?

Right click my computer > click 'disk management'

Find 'disk G', read what else it says there.

You did COPY the data across?

In that case just format the damn thing and copy the data again.

Is it one you can HOT SWAP? as in you can plug it in when the pc is on?

Some don't like that, my Maxtor external drive was plugged in to USB2 when I started using the Firewire lead instead I hot swapped it and it read that the disc was empty.

Turned everything off, re connected all the leads (making sure the hard drive was turned on) then started the pc. Everything was back as it was before I unpluged the USB lead.
