FWIW even with a 'family' lifestyle there is sometimes a need for a backup plan. Bike has come in handy when car is in need of TLC or just needed elsewhere. It's also a useful tool for a bit of relaxation.
I can see if you sell both then there'll be a lull which will be filled with life happening, so it may be some time before you feel there's the spare time/cash to get a bike. To avoid that either keep at least one (the most reliable/favourite) or make sure as soon as one sells you use some of the money to buy another machine, maybe smaller, say 500cc for the slightly cheaper tax/insurance break.
Just my thoughts
Best of luck with your family lifestyle, I'm still on the learning curve on that ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

If he's got a bike, you should keep one! Just keep it, you'll get by, just cut something else less important out or shop somewhere cheap or some crap like that. An XJR is for life. ____________________ NC30 + Bandit 6

I agree it's not practical to have a family with only bikes; hell it's virtually impossible. But having a car and a bike shouldn't ever become a problem, unless you've got severe financial issues. Family life is stressful, and a bike is an easy, convenient, and fairly cheap way of relieving some stress, without having to get naked. |

When I blew my bike up I went a few days and HAD to buy another I couldnt even wait a week or two to get a new engine then get it fitted and what not. Of course it depends how much enjoyment you get from your bikes... ____________________ TL1000s, KDX200 |

Thanks for all your replies.
I am currently at my parents house in Wales, I drove the car here (loaded with tortoises, camping equipment and a cat) and hubby rode his GSX1400 up.
Him and my brother (on his R6) went for a ride up to Brecon & Abergavenny this morning and I cried like a fucking baby as I watched them go.
I just stood there and sobbed.
I feel pressurised into selling the bikes and martyrising myself by sacrificing things that, to be honest, define me as a person.
I try telling myself that it's just a short term thing and I'll be able to ride again next year, but something inside me (possibly the foetus) is saying that I'll never have the opportunity to enjoy biking again.
I am only a recent convert to the joy of two wheels - been riding just over 2 years, but it is a major part of my life. I've only had the XJR for 1 year and it truely is the most valuble material possession I have.
These past 6 weeks I have been off the bikes have been torture.
Self inflicted admittedly, it's not as if I have been involved in an accident or anything.
I'm going to have a very long, hard think about it all (which I seem to be doing constantly) and decide whether I will get more satisfaction out of holding onto a bike or convincing myself that selling the bikes is the 'right thing to do'.
Thanks again for your tolerance,
It does help having somewhere I can have others (mostly biased ) opinions

This won't be a popular thing to say, but id tell your Hubby to sell his bike! Your selling both of yours, to help with things for the family and for when your baby comes along. He has got away completely without having to sacrifice anything by the sounds of it. His GSX1400 must be worth considerably more than either of your bikes, so why not both of you keep the smaller most economical bike and sell the 2 most valuable ones?
Or sell all three, and tell your other half to give you 1/2 the money, and he can use the rest to buy another bike for himself?
Im considering selling my ZX6R soon, as i hav'nt used it for 2years, and as much as i want to start riding it again, i know i will have to sell it, as im trying to save to buy my first house by next spring at the latest. Now my bike isn't worth 1/2 as much as my car, but i have decided to sell both, as i could'nt decide to keep just one of them or which?
The point about having some sort of bike is a very good and valid one though. I have a broken part dismantled KMX200 sat in the back of the Garage, and i have the cost of a brand new KMX sat in a bank account, ready and waiting for my re-build project.
I like many other people have always said i can't ever see myself without a bike, and thats my aim to always have a road going working bike of some description for the rest of my life. If i could only afford a tatty looking superdream, it's still massively better than having no bike at all!
I'd still like a newish litre class naked bike/streetfighter, when i have the money to afford it, maybe within the next 5years? But next year if ive got my house, my KMX restored like new, and a cheap oldish car to restore/modify i'll be very happy!
I like the idea that some people who have not got the means to afford to run a bike and a car, choose the bike as their only transport! But it's the exception for most people, and i never though id say it, but i want a car as much as a bike these days, and i could possibly get as much fun out of owning/working on a car as i do from a bike, especially if it was a track day ready, roll cage equipted stripped out, tuned 80's turbo hatch or coupe! |
