Both my bikes are on the 'For Sale' section, but am I making a big mistake?

Maybe I ought to ask Auntie BCF........

It depends what your plans are when they've both sold.

I 'm not too sure I will have much say in 'my plans' after they are sold.

The cash will be used to fund a 'family' lifestyle - possibly be put towards a new car or the multitude of accessories that my new lifestyle will be requiring....

Should I keep one of them?

Oh hell, I don't know......feckin' hormones!

Please ingnore me!

Being a biker myself, i reckon if you sold them both and decided not to get another bike (even a cheap one) as well as improving your lifestyle you may regret it

FWIW even with a 'family' lifestyle there is sometimes a need for a backup plan. Bike has come in handy when car is in need of TLC or just needed elsewhere. It's also a useful tool for a bit of relaxation.

I can see if you sell both then there'll be a lull which will be filled with life happening, so it may be some time before you feel there's the spare time/cash to get a bike. To avoid that either keep at least one (the most reliable/favourite) or make sure as soon as one sells you use some of the money to buy another machine, maybe smaller, say 500cc for the slightly cheaper tax/insurance break.

Just my thoughts Thumbs Up

Best of luck with your family lifestyle, I'm still on the learning curve on that Wink Very Happy

map, my hubby has a GSX1400 so I will be able to go for a thrash when time/recovery allows.

It's just that the GSX is his bike, and nice though it is to share, it's not my bike - iykwim

The other difficulty is that my favourite also happens to be the more expensive and therefore cash rich asset of the two. If I keep the Zeph I will just be pining for the XJR. If I keep the XJR, I will be wondering if I should have sold it during the summer when I am sitting like a fat, pregnant whale in the winter and living in poverty.

I have to make a clean break & say bye bye to both.

Then as I said, see about getting something else to tide you over.

I know what you mean about sharing bikes. My missus wouldn't want to ride mine, too big and heavy, and doesn't do pillion because of being put off by a dickhead in her past.

ATM she's happy having a 125 in the garage. It's her bike, I'm sure you and others can relate Wink Very Happy

Besides, look on the up side. A few years down the road and there's lots of bike gear for kids now Thumbs Up

If he's got a bike, you should keep one! Just keep it, you'll get by, just cut something else less important out or shop somewhere cheap or some crap like that. An XJR is for life.

I disagree most vehemently. I've known a fair few parents use bikes to trasport family, sidecar at first and then kid on the back when it's old enough. You already have the bikes now, if you sell them then want another one a few years down the way I can almost guarantee the cash won't be there to buy one. Seen it happen so many times Confused

Yes, sell one, or both, but at least replace with some sort of bike to be included in that 'family lifestyle'. The way Dad's eyes lightened up when I was 15 and discussed getting a bike for the first time showed how much he'd missed biking. I don't think I could ever get biking out of my blood; it'll be like trying to sever a limb.

I agree it's not practical to have a family with only bikes; hell it's virtually impossible. But having a car and a bike shouldn't ever become a problem, unless you've got severe financial issues. Family life is stressful, and a bike is an easy, convenient, and fairly cheap way of relieving some stress, without having to get naked. Wink

We only have our bikes now as simply could not afford to have a car as well and we manage ok. Yes winter is a bit difficult sometimes but no where is far here unlike for some of you guys and gals on the mainland, I imagine a car is a necessity. When we did have a car it was only really used to do the weekly shop, seemed such a waste of tax etc to sit on the drive 95% of the time so I sold it so as I could get my bike!

When I blew my bike up I went a few days and HAD to buy another Shocked I couldnt even wait a week or two to get a new engine then get it fitted and what not. Of course it depends how much enjoyment you get from your bikes...

Hubby and I hope to start a family next year and at first I was sure I'd give up the bike but now I'm not so sure.

Your in a good position having two bikes and should take advantage of it, I'd sell one and keep one.

Once the baby is born you may decide you don't want to ride again but at least you'll still have the option and if you find you don't ride the bike then sell it.

I'd definatly wait until family life has got some routine as things will be very different with a child and what you want now may not be what you want later!! Sell one and keep the other, at least for the short term.

Thanks for all your replies.

I am currently at my parents house in Wales, I drove the car here (loaded with tortoises, camping equipment and a cat) and hubby rode his GSX1400 up.
Him and my brother (on his R6) went for a ride up to Brecon & Abergavenny this morning and I cried like a fucking baby as I watched them go.
I just stood there and sobbed.

I feel pressurised into selling the bikes and martyrising myself by sacrificing things that, to be honest, define me as a person.

I try telling myself that it's just a short term thing and I'll be able to ride again next year, but something inside me (possibly the foetus) is saying that I'll never have the opportunity to enjoy biking again.

I am only a recent convert to the joy of two wheels - been riding just over 2 years, but it is a major part of my life. I've only had the XJR for 1 year and it truely is the most valuble material possession I have.
These past 6 weeks I have been off the bikes have been torture.
Self inflicted admittedly, it's not as if I have been involved in an accident or anything.

I'm going to have a very long, hard think about it all (which I seem to be doing constantly) and decide whether I will get more satisfaction out of holding onto a bike or convincing myself that selling the bikes is the 'right thing to do'.

Thanks again for your tolerance,
It does help having somewhere I can have others (mostly biased Wink ) opinions
xx

I dont think this will help much but when our first child came along my wife stopped going pillion and has not been on the bike since.
Someone has to look after them if you want to go out so unless your parents live at home then you may struggle for a babysitter.
I have been out on the bike a lot less since the fist came along and can hardly remember what my bike looks like now the second has arrived.
If you get rid of them and decide you want to get one again then do it. But moneywise you willbe better off selling them cos they wont get much use.

By the way. Babies don't cost as much as people say they do.

This won't be a popular thing to say, but id tell your Hubby to sell his bike! Your selling both of yours, to help with things for the family and for when your baby comes along. He has got away completely without having to sacrifice anything by the sounds of it. His GSX1400 must be worth considerably more than either of your bikes, so why not both of you keep the smaller most economical bike and sell the 2 most valuable ones?

Or sell all three, and tell your other half to give you 1/2 the money, and he can use the rest to buy another bike for himself?

Im considering selling my ZX6R soon, as i hav'nt used it for 2years, and as much as i want to start riding it again, i know i will have to sell it, as im trying to save to buy my first house by next spring at the latest. Now my bike isn't worth 1/2 as much as my car, but i have decided to sell both, as i could'nt decide to keep just one of them or which?

The point about having some sort of bike is a very good and valid one though. I have a broken part dismantled KMX200 sat in the back of the Garage, and i have the cost of a brand new KMX sat in a bank account, ready and waiting for my re-build project.

I like many other people have always said i can't ever see myself without a bike, and thats my aim to always have a road going working bike of some description for the rest of my life. If i could only afford a tatty looking superdream, it's still massively better than having no bike at all!

I'd still like a newish litre class naked bike/streetfighter, when i have the money to afford it, maybe within the next 5years? But next year if ive got my house, my KMX restored like new, and a cheap oldish car to restore/modify i'll be very happy!

I like the idea that some people who have not got the means to afford to run a bike and a car, choose the bike as their only transport! But it's the exception for most people, and i never though id say it, but i want a car as much as a bike these days, and i could possibly get as much fun out of owning/working on a car as i do from a bike, especially if it was a track day ready, roll cage equipted stripped out, tuned 80's turbo hatch or coupe! Laughing

I completely disagree, sometimes there are situations where you become bikeless or need to sell (like money issues for example) and you feel you could bear without having a bike. I very nearly decided to turn my back on biking but in the end relised i just couldnt do it.

I reacon most people in their life will spend a period without a bike for many reasons:
Arrow Lack of space
Arrow No where suitible for the bike to be stored (no garage)
Arrow Rough area
Arrow Money
Arrow Partner wants you to have no bike

Im sure there are many other reasons aswell that i have missed but sometime you need to sacrifice you hobbie/transport for the good of others/something you need. Thumbs Up
