just a thought and shoot me down if this has been thought of before but, with the usual winter chill coming on soon heated grips are in the back of my mind.
Ever the economist or tight arse whichever way you want to look at it i was wondering if you could have heated grips without the use of the battery.
i.e the exhaust gets plenty hot and all of that energy is wasted, so why not route some of it to the handlebars using a simple pipe and valve system to control the tapped flow of hot gasses from the exhaust.
I can't believe no-one else has thought of this which is why i'm curious as to if it will work or not,
Also little pipes under the seat for even more comfort?
PLUS it would look cool to have 10 % of your exhaust smoke coming from your handle bars wouldn't it?
Let me know what you tinks.
Cheers |

Er no , energy cannot be created it can only be converted, if you divert your exhaust it just causes more back pressure and takes power from the engine,
which would be v bad on a 2 stroke bike cus they heavily rely on exhaust waves to draw in fresh fuel and air,
while the alternator probably converts well more electricity than is needed , and is probably much more efficient at it also to boot.
100s of thermocouples attached to your radiator / engine or pipes might work , but thermo couples covert microscopic amounts of energy and you'd need lots of them and also engines work best at a certain temp such that when starting up it might be a bit rough,
heat pipes might work ie conduct the heat directly but then there is no way of regulating it, a simple method would probably to link the water cooling of the engine to a secondary radiator (ie your grips) ,
but this means more energy is required by the water pump , probably more than normal oxford heated grips would take. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. i'm now hooked on the idea of smoke coming from the handle bars though |

What about that coffee invention that warms itself up, by combining two chemicals that heat rapidly. That substance could be put into a wrap around container sort of thing and the substances combined for temporary warmth.
Though I bet in the long run it would be cheaper to just buy muffs and heated grips.
Link to coffee invention. |

I'd thought similar before, and but as mentioned via the cooling system.. if i'm not mistaken some carbs are heated in this ay, i.e. a feed from the cooling system, to prevent carb iceing..
Some sort of pump like a washer jet maybe? runs from a pipe out of the resivoir and returns to the same place after runing up to the bars... perhaps a thermostat somewhere inside..
It would still be a very expensive complex way arround it.. could also make some sort of plug in vest that has coolant going arround thin guage tubes, seat maybe, and gloves even.. that mnight make it worth it.. it coudl work, but i'd imagein it woudl have its fair share of technical issues! (compared to the extreemly simple, non messy electircal route) ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

yeah i was just thinking of a simple way to use the bi product of the bike when running, i got inspired after fitting a scottoiler a few days ago (carb vacuum opens valve, oil comes out, genius!!) and then heard folks talking about heated grips.
Maybe a rubber water pipe already filled with water so no pump needed but just heated from the water in the rad, the heat can flow through the water perhaps?
No smoke from the handlebars though |

I suppose you could block the handlebars off inside, run a thin hot water feed pipe through them and out of the bar ends, somehow and back through the fairing into the radiator, using a tap to shut the pipe off for summer riding.
Maybe someone from Honda is reading this and I can expect a letter from a patent lawyer about nicking their idea for the next Goldwing/Pan :S
Or maybe not |
