If you do this you will lose top end speed but it will take of quicker. |

It is to do with the final gear ratio, if you make the ratio "higher" then you will gain top speed and you will cruise at fewer revs, if you lower it you will gain acceleration but loose top speed, normal practice for this is 2 go up or down a few teeth on the back or change them for a set for differnt things e.g. i think that 14/47 is the preferd one for trail riding.
It All depends on what you want the bike to do, and on the bike some will be fine with the change in the gearing others wont be able to pull the higher gearing when in the higher gears or some with end up with a lot of wheel spin on lower gears. ____________________ 2nd time around CBT: 8/9/11

Other way round mate, by changing sprocket sizes you are effectively changing the final gearing of the bike. Sprocket changes alter both the top speed and the accelleration and it is a compromise between the two.
To increase top speed increase number of teeth on front sprocket or reduce number of teeth on rear sprocket.
Racers often change rear sprockets to alter gearing for particular circuits. |
