When you say 'turn the ignition on', have you actually started the bikes engine?

On a 4-stroke, when you turn the ignition on, the oil light will come on as there is no oil pressure.

When you start the engine the light will go out, as the running engine will now be (should be) producing a good high oil pressure.

If the oil light comes on when the engine is running, thats when you need to worry, as that means the oil 'pressure' is low and therefore not lubricating as it should be. If this happens, switch the engine off straight away.

Causes for low pressure could be either a low amount of oil in the engine, or a blockage somewhere.

On a 2-stroke bike, the oil light will also be on when the ignition is on, and go out when the engine is started. BUT, when it comes on when the engine is running, it just mean's you need to fill up the 2-stroke oil tank, NOT gearbox.

Thumbs Up

Sounds completely normal to me mate. Just like being in a car, the oil light is also on until you start it up.

But remember, its and oil 'pressure' light, not level. The level can be checked by looking at the right side of the engine, you'll see a small clear round window about the size of a 50p peice. Get the bike upright (ie: not on the side stand) and you should see the oil level somewhere inbetween the upper and lower markers. Thumbs Up

Best thing I could suggest is to get a Haynes manual for your bike, it will teach you all the basic maintainance things.

Thumbs Up

The reason it lights up when you turn the ignition on is so that you, the driver, can check that the oil light is working.

If you turn the ignition on and the oil light doesn't seem to work, there's either a problem with the LED, or something more sinister.

On a 2-stroke, yes. On a 4-stroke it is on beacuse there is no oil pressure.
