Hello all!

I'm in the process of making a very dangerous weapon......I'm fitting a cbr 600 engine to a small off road buggy type thing.

I'm not a fan of wiring! I think i now have the correct CDI unit it's from a 97 bike and I think the engine is 95 so that should work??

Can you use regular 12v coils from any bike with CDI ignition systems, or do you need to use specific CDI spec coils?

Thanks muchly, i'll post some videos of me crashing it as soon as its running!

a coil is a coil my friend, it just has a signal wire and common return to the cdi(2 wires from each coil)
the cdi should work, im not sure there was any difference to the ignition system. but you can all but try aye Very Happy
hope that helps ya a bit, i hope you realise you aree obliged to post photos now Very Happy i did a similar thing back in nz a few years ago with a gsx 750 engine very fun

Somebody is going to be having some very mental fun sometime in the future Very Happy

As far as electrics go, simplicity would suggest you get hold a wiring loom for a CBR600 from a breakers. Then you can just use the bike wiring diagram as a start point.

Yep that's what I'm thinking. Unfortunately I believe I have an F2 engine (as there is no speedo pickup of the crankcase) and a '97 CDI. So which loom would be easiest to use?

Thanks

basically most wiring is the same, im not sure if you have an internal recifier or an external one on your bike(is there 3 wires from the alternator or just 2? if you have 2 then your rectifier is internal)
wiring a carburator engine is easy, i could make you up a wiring diagram if you want, unless you want indicators and guage lights, but again thats all easy,
the only difficult bit in using another bikes loom is the connectors and srorting the side stand switch and what not.
let me know if you wand me to draw something up for you Very Happy

That would be awesome if you could. It's got an external rectifier, I have a Honda Superdream one, or some form of CBR one to use.

Basically I have no idea what any of the pins in the CDI are for or how to connect to them! If anyone has a connector block with the coloured wires that would help!?

ok what do you want in the way of warning lights? oil and neutral? is that enough, do you want the lighting circuits, brake lights ect
or just bare bones (less to wire Very Happy)

Nope no lights required. Maybe oil and neutral would be a good idea but i could probably survive without it. Just want it to run asap!! Laughing

ok here is a wiring diagram almost as basic as i could get it, i could simplify the ignition/fan switch a bit more and if i can find out about the throttle sensor i could probly do some thing there as well but id say its probly essential to the timing advance ect
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/cbrwiring2.jpg
i hope that helps ya a bit, let me know if you need any thing explained Very Happy if you were near me i could probly give you a hand wiring

And prize for person who officially doesn't know he will blow a CDI with misinformation goes to.........................

Hmmmnz.

Coils have different primary resistances. On an inline four, four stroke its normally either 2.2 ohms or 3.0 ohms. I think on your bike it uses the 3 ohms ones.

I might know where there's loom and CDI (and engine if you ever need a replacement). Have to check the year though.

Using the wrong coils is a common way of frying the ignition systems on FZ750s. Early and late model FZs used different ignition systems and the coils are not compatable with each other.

All the best
