 |
|
I was in my local asda, pottering along in 2nd gear because it was chocka block with cars & people all over the place, when suddenly a car comes pissing out of a T junction at god knows what speed, staright across my path and over to the other side of the road. Didn't stop at the junction, didn't look, nothing.
I did an emergency stop and managed to miss the car by about 6 inches, but as I braked the bike went over onto its side (and me with it). The clutch lever is bent back over, the rear indicator lense has been destroyed (although the indicator still works) and the little 'knobbly thing' that goes into the end of the handlebar where the front brake is, has come out. It doesn't look like it'll go back in. pretty minor stuff really.
The girl blamed it on me, said I was going far too fast etc etc, blah blah. Then a couple of bystanders come up and said they'd seen the whole thing, the car driver was going far too fast and didn't stop at the junction, or the 'Give Way' sign. The car drivers fault completely.
That's when the car driver accepted it was her fault. I got her registration and phone number and she offered to pay for the damage. She also asked me not to stiff her when it comes to paying (pretty much like she was trying to stiff me by denying it), and asked me not to go through the insurance. Not that I can see they'll even be interested.
But anyway, as I picked my bike up a little bit of petrol formed on the road, maybe about a cup full or so, give or take. I think this may just be out of the carb, but I'm still concerned it could be indicative of something more serious. Is that possible, or likely, considering there was no impact? And can I ride with the rear indicator the way it is, ie. working but as a flashing bulb without the lense?
Cheers,
Richie ____________________ YBR125 |

Petrol coming out when the bike is on it's side is normal, don't worry.
Indicator, you "shouldn't", but personally, I wouldn't worry (bike I was riding today only has one indicator ). |

I'd sort it amicably without the insurance companies getting involved. Having dealt with the scum who make a profit from criminals stealing and destroying bikes, I'd avoid using them if at all possible. For £40-50 of damage, I'd fix it yourself. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

I phoned the police and they said that because no-one was injured they wouldn't take any action. Not interested basically.
As it stands, I missed her car by 6 inches, but if I'd been ½ a second slower on the brakes I would've been completely fucking broadsided and tossed over the car like a ragdoll. Fuck knows what damage that would've done to me leg.
That's the fucking annoying part!
She said, "Sorry, I didn't see you," so I said, "That's because you didn't fucking look. If you'd stopped at that big fucking Give Way sign, where those little white lines are marked on the road to signify a junction, and looked both ways you would've c**ting seen me wouldn't you? I've got my headlight on and I've got a bright fucking yellow high-viz waistcoat on. So what else could I have done? I've got right of way, YOU should've stopped." ____________________ YBR125 |

I thought most bikers did, i certainly do.
As for indicator, it must show amber, so if the lense is broke, and its flashing white, you could get into trouble if seem by police.
As for damage, if she is willing to pay damage, let her, but make sure your not out of pocket in the slightest, if bike will be away to be fixed, tell her you need use of a hire bike etc (as you will prob get one if you went through insurance (or tell her that anyway)) |

What is under dispute is judging speed.
A driver sees a light so knows there's a bike behing them. Coming up to their driveway they check behind and still see the light, as they can't see the shape of the bike, just a point of light, they don't have any idea the bike's now closing very quickly.
No one else around, so no need to indicate. |
I'm inclined to agree with G, but I'd much rather increase the chances of them seeing me in the first place, as if they dont see you they'll pull out anyways. I dont have a choice with my bike anyway, the headlights are permanently on ____________________ TL1000s, KDX200 |

having lights on increases chances of getting spotted at a junction or roundabout, as the light is on, there is light heading out in multiple directions, which the eye picks up as a wider object than just the light reflecting off of the motorcycle.
as you look wider, you have a higher chance of being seen, in the sense that you are more likely to spot a 4x4 than a motorbike, as the 4x4 is wider, and bigger (and more often than not driving badly) ____________________ Past: 55 Sym Jet, 91 ZZR250, 03 NSR125R. Present: 97 ER-5.
