PostPosted: 19:37 - 06 Oct 2006    Post subject: I've been in a bit of a crash Reply with quote

I was in my local asda, pottering along in 2nd gear because it was chocka block with cars & people all over the place, when suddenly a car comes pissing out of a T junction at god knows what speed, staright across my path and over to the other side of the road. Didn't stop at the junction, didn't look, nothing.

I did an emergency stop and managed to miss the car by about 6 inches, but as I braked the bike went over onto its side (and me with it). The clutch lever is bent back over, the rear indicator lense has been destroyed (although the indicator still works) and the little 'knobbly thing' that goes into the end of the handlebar where the front brake is, has come out. It doesn't look like it'll go back in. pretty minor stuff really.

The girl blamed it on me, said I was going far too fast etc etc, blah blah. Then a couple of bystanders come up and said they'd seen the whole thing, the car driver was going far too fast and didn't stop at the junction, or the 'Give Way' sign. The car drivers fault completely. Evil or Very Mad

That's when the car driver accepted it was her fault. I got her registration and phone number and she offered to pay for the damage. She also asked me not to stiff her when it comes to paying (pretty much like she was trying to stiff me by denying it), and asked me not to go through the insurance. Not that I can see they'll even be interested.

But anyway, as I picked my bike up a little bit of petrol formed on the road, maybe about a cup full or so, give or take. I think this may just be out of the carb, but I'm still concerned it could be indicative of something more serious. Is that possible, or likely, considering there was no impact? And can I ride with the rear indicator the way it is, ie. working but as a flashing bulb without the lense?

Cheers,

Richie

Petrol coming out when the bike is on it's side is normal, don't worry.

Indicator, you "shouldn't", but personally, I wouldn't worry (bike I was riding today only has one indicator Smile ).

Slightly over inflate the price of parts, and get a blowjob off her for the trouble. Sorted Mr. Green

Depends if he wants to get his bike fixed soon, or for the owner of a 'specialist repair center' to line his pockets a little more.

Of course, presuming she has insurance.

If she doesn't, you can probably get her done for no insurance, but will end up pretty out of pocket yourself.

I'd sort it amicably without the insurance companies getting involved. Having dealt with the scum who make a profit from criminals stealing and destroying bikes, I'd avoid using them if at all possible. For £40-50 of damage, I'd fix it yourself.

I phoned the police and they said that because no-one was injured they wouldn't take any action. Not interested basically.

As it stands, I missed her car by 6 inches, but if I'd been ½ a second slower on the brakes I would've been completely fucking broadsided and tossed over the car like a ragdoll. Fuck knows what damage that would've done to me leg. Evil or Very Mad

That's the fucking annoying part!

She said, "Sorry, I didn't see you," so I said, "That's because you didn't fucking look. If you'd stopped at that big fucking Give Way sign, where those little white lines are marked on the road to signify a junction, and looked both ways you would've c**ting seen me wouldn't you? I've got my headlight on and I've got a bright fucking yellow high-viz waistcoat on. So what else could I have done? I've got right of way, YOU should've stopped."

Your totally right really, thats the sensible thing to do.. guess you can find out where the car is and fill the heater with prawns at a later date..

Yeah, it's a "feature" of the bike. Comes on automatically, dipped, when I switch the ignition on.

I don't. From what legal-bods have said and from my own personal experience it makes it harder for other road users to work out how far you are away and how quickly you are going.

Sidelights for me.

He He. Good for, I have had similar conversations in the past. I'm a placid chap but sometimes things have to be said.

Get a quote for getting it fixed at a dealer. Get the cash then do it yourself. Even if it not your fault you *really* don't want the insurance database to have a crash against your name.

I don't have the option of sidelights on my ZX6, dipped is automatically on when i start it up.

It was the same on my Bandit as well.

I completely agree with this.

I used to always ride with headlight on in the day, but never do now, not even side lights. From my years of driving a car and riding a bike, I've noticed that from a car driving perspective, it doesn't make the bike any more visable with it on.

You'd be better off making sure your not in a cars blind spot and keeping aware than putting on your headlight and assuming that everyone can now see you.

Thumbs Up

Funny, I find when i'm riding I see other bikers from much further away if they have their lights on, needless to say mine shall aways be on.

You can see them from further away, that isn't under dispute (unless everyone has lights on, of course).

What is under dispute is judging speed.

A driver sees a light so knows there's a bike behing them. Coming up to their driveway they check behind and still see the light, as they can't see the shape of the bike, just a point of light, they don't have any idea the bike's now closing very quickly.
No one else around, so no need to indicate.

I'm inclined to agree with G, but I'd much rather increase the chances of them seeing me in the first place, as if they dont see you they'll pull out anyways. I dont have a choice with my bike anyway, the headlights are permanently on Laughing

Took the words right out of my mouth ram_doom, I'd prefer to be seen even if they don't know how fast I'm going than not seen at all. Imo car drivers often give a quick glance at junctions(as per the think! advert) and a bike with a light on is much more likely to catch their attention. Not saying you will definetly be seen, but you have a much greater chance.

I'm happy enough that a decent side light is enough to be seen a way away, without bliding people to what you're doing.

I do like the idea of doing something like outlining headlights plastics with a boy-racer style glowy flexible tube, so that there's a bit more light, but still enough to make out detail.

having lights on increases chances of getting spotted at a junction or roundabout, as the light is on, there is light heading out in multiple directions, which the eye picks up as a wider object than just the light reflecting off of the motorcycle.

as you look wider, you have a higher chance of being seen, in the sense that you are more likely to spot a 4x4 than a motorbike, as the 4x4 is wider, and bigger (and more often than not driving badly)

Even a 4x4 can be entirely hidden from view by the A-pillar blind spot of another car, regardless of whether or not the 4x4 has it's lights on Thumbs Up Smile
