Posted: 15:27 - 08 Nov 2006 Post subject: Mates that ride like prats |
 |
|
So, having finally gotten a bigger bike (The lurvly divvy), I've managed to shift on the ol' TZR125.
I sold it to my mate.
Now... this mate of mine has been riding bikes for years... but off-road. He's been riding a lot longer than me in total, however I've been riding on the road for nearly a year now, and he has been OTR for a month or so.
In short - I'm worried about his riding. He does have a CBT, he's insured, taxed and everything but it's just his riding style is so dangerously aggressive.
He will do every thing he can do shave a few seconds off his journey. Only yesterday he flew across a cross-junction turning right, when traffic was coming from the opposite side turning left. Obviously they have right of way. None the less, he went straight over the junction to turn right and forced the opposite car (turning left) to slam the brakes, nearly making the car behind that one slam into it. There was only quite literally a few inches between my made and the car, he just rode away as if nothing had happened. I gave the driver a shrug and mouthed "sorry" and followed my mate again.
When I talked to him at the petrol station he told me what a prick he thought that driver was.
"What? That driver was in the right of way! Are you mad going across like that?"
"No, I was quicker than him going across the junction, he should have been watching for motorcycles."
...Needless to say it was pointless trying to convince him he was in the wrong. I even pointed out that if there HAD been a collision, he would have been found the one in the wrong.
It's not the only time that he's made my heart skip a beat by far. He undertakes on single-lane roads (Often barely missing parked cars), does dodgy overtakes past junctions and stuff.
I feel partly responsible since I sold him the bike that he's going to end up killing himself on. I've tried talking to him and getting him to tone down his riding but he just seems to maintain that as a biker he's always in the right.
Add to that that his father has told me if anything happens to his son then he's going to hold ME responsible (His dad is a pretty big guy).
What can I do to get him to tone down his riding? Is there anything I can do? Or is the only way he'll learn is by eating some tarmac? ____________________ Yamaha YB100 | Yamaha TZR125 | Yamaha XJ600S | Suzuki GSF600

This is such a familiar story.
You've said your bit. if he isn't prepared to listen to his mate, then nothing more you can say will make him listen. Best you can hope for is that when he does finally come a cropper he isn't maimed or killed, and doesn't hurt anyone else. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

If it's possible, take him into one of those bikesafe class. That normally puts sense back , i heard!
Yeah, let his dad know for sure that you feel sorry that you sold him the bike.
I ride to work everyday, and was overtaken by blue Ninja (old shape) today. I normally don't filter at more then +10/15 mph of the speed of traffic. But the guy, just flew past, even managing a wave at me 'cos I let him thru, and the way and the speed he was swaying in and out of lanes was frightening. I have seen him couple of times and am sure he wears proper jacket, but baggy trousers. As I don't know him, i can only wish him luck as I see him fade away in distance..
I would hv to go for a track day to get my aggression out and test my limit, but in day to day riding, I will do what i find sensible. ____________________ Theory: 34/35, 64/75 Test: 23-Oct-06 PASSED (No minors)

I need new friends; they are the opposite to yours - complete pussies who are shit scared to overtake even in the most safest of places. |

Point him to this site : www.ogrish.com
Find Motorcycle accidents
Show him what he will look like when he comes off.
This site made me seriously change my attitude to riding, hopefully it will do the same for your m8. |

Personally I would let his dad know that you are concerned about his riding style. Then I wouldn't go riding with him again. ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!

You could always point him toward this forum and get him to boast about his latest riding triumph.
We'd soon take him down a peg or two!!
On a slightly more serious note, I strongly suggest you go and have a word with his dad, not least because it will save you eating hospital food after your mate comes a cropper.
Maybe even overdo it a bit: "I've /told/ him about his riding, but he /just/ won't listen!"
The trouble with people like this is, too much testosterone and not enough brains. Its worryingly common in 16-19 year olds. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade
Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another. |
