Give it a good clean (this was the hardest part).
I decided to take it right down to the metal, should last a bit longer this way, and will be easier to do next time around.
I used one of the metal "spinny brush things" (sorry dont know what they are called) to take it down. I started with sand paper, but that was far too much effort.
Shockingly, the spinning wire brush was also a lot less corse than the sand paper (I needed a fairly high grit to get it off Sad )
The different colours on the metal isnt parts ive missed, but where it was sanded in different directions - its just the way the light is reflecting it. Its actually very smooth Smile

Paint with heat resistant paint

Hurrah!
What a difference Smile

The paint hides all marks from the sanding. It was already quite smooth, but if I had of known how much a good job of hiding it the paint was going to do, I wouldnt have wasted so much time on it.

Exhaust gas temperature are 900 degrees-plus on a 4-stroke sportsbike.

What paint did you use there ? Not seen HRP that is brushable.

Used to use sprayable stuff many moons ago on my 2 stroke's worked well, as has been said you need to spend a good amount of time preping and not just spraying over the old rust...

I have a tin of brushable heat-resistant paint.

I've repainted my gpz's pipe too, what I did is to remove all the old paint using stripsol and emove some more that sticks on the pipe with a wire brush and sandpaper.

After that cleaning and prepping I brushed it with a Rust Converter solution then spray it with a 1500F flat black hi temp paint.

I think the problem many people have with exhaust paint is that they don't sufficiently cleanse the surface beforehand.

Any minor particles or residues will inhibit the rather crucial bond between paint and metal, and in a high-temperature high-corrosion area like an exhaust the most minute inhibition will lead to flaking.

I may be wrong but I believe a sandblasting and a chemical bath of some kind is the best way, and anything short is not ideal.
