Posted: 14:46 - 28 Mar 2007 Post subject: Urgent advice on Restrictions for Speed Four |
 |
|
Hi,
Today my Speed four went in to be restricted (33bhp licence). But was told by the garage there is no such restrictor for the Speed Four? is this true? I was under the assumption that being a Fuel injected bike that it was simply a throttle limiter that made it 33bhp.
Please can someone help, if this is true then i have really screwed myself over, and my insurance started today so would only get 60% or something back if worst case i had to sell.
Thanks ____________________ 99 RS125 --> 02 SV650s --> 03 Speed Four --> 92 RXS100 --> 93 CB400sf --> 01 CB600f Hornet |

Well id personally just say its restricted, as 5 months is not to long to wait but that is ultimatly down to you as it can cause no end of problems if you crash.
Would have thought they could restrict any bike though ____________________ My Bike Pics |

There is no legal method of restriction, in the sense that there is no recognised/certified method of restriction.
If you get the bike dynoed and the dyno operator happens not to open the throttle all the way then you have 'proof of restriction'.
The FI International gubbins is NOT a legal document. Basically the only way the police can enforce it is if they take the bike away and dyno it. A certificate might help but they could say that it is meaningless (which legally it is).
However 99% of policemen don't even understand the restriction law, and some think you can't ride a bike bigger than 600cc (as quoted to members on here) and some aren't even aware of a restriction element to the law.
Basically its one of the worst implemented and enforced laws in the whole of the UK. If the police don't understand it, and there is no legal way of proving that your bike is or isn't restricted short of the police consulting an expert witness (which they won't unless they think they might lose a gigantic court case).
Pretty much the only reason you are getting your bike restricted is to obey the letter of the law and to make your parents happy. In this case your parents have the same evidence of restriction that the police do, IE your say so, or the dealers say so.
In other words there is no LEGAL element to this situation which can prove or disprove your bike is restricted. It just has to make less than 33bhp.
The reason I'm going on about this is guaranteed your parents will insist there is something else you can do to prove your bike is legal, but as long as the kit is correctly fitted, there is nothing anyone can do to prove or disprove the bike is restricted, short of an expert dismantling the bike and seeing the restrictor.
To Andy C's parents: It doesn't matter who fits the restrictor, or whether or not there is a 'certificate'... as long as the bike makes less than 33bhp then its legal. The certificates are deliberately misleading because FI international want to take your money for a few 10p washers.
At least Triumph have the good sense and decency to charge a reasonable price for their restrictor, and indeed design it so it is an integral part of the bike, and cannot be removed unless it is replaced with the original throttle stop.
Kudos to Triumph for this I'd say! ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F
Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another. |
