hi all, what is classed as a high mileage bike ? I know it depends on the owner and services etc. but was just wondering on average what a high mileage would be-i.e. one to put me off buying a particular bike!

many thanks Smile

It depends on the bike. For a 125 then 20k is getting on a bit, for a big BMW 20k is only just run in.

My Fazer has over 45k miles on the clock, and I was offered a better deal on a new 'bike if I didn't trade it in Confused

10k seems to be the threshold for most 'bikes - bit like 100k is for cars.

The plus side is that those of us that know 'bikes will do many, many more miles than that can pick up some right bargains.

I have had it in for regular services (when it is meant to go in) and no problems yet (apart from an oil leak lol)

If a bike is well made, it will last as long as you look after it.

Completly depends on the bike.

40K on a VFR750/800/pan euro/dullville is nothing.

40K on a 600cc sports bike is a lot.

My SV had a little over 20k on when I traded it in, and although it was in excellent condition, the mileage was what let me down on the value. I don't consider 20k a high mileage by any means, but like said, it depends on the bike itself.

High Milage = (State of tune x CC)/regular servicing

Or some crap like that. I would say those are the key factors though.

Have got around 45k on mine at moment and i do anything up to 15k a year. As long as its been serviced regularly and well looked after, then mileage shouldn't be a problem.

I'd have thought that 600 SS bikes would be about 100K for alot since they are more highly engineered for higher faster revving , since 90% of the time they are used for commuting they are never strained and thus likely to last longer , me NTV is also very very underused sort of commutes other than motorway I never go over 3000RPM , for motorway never really over 5000RPM (bt motorways are like car parks round here for commutes).

It all depends on the bike.

50k on a sportsbike makes it nigh on worthless. Whereas a 50k bandit will still get you to work everyday. Or all the way across europe.

Personally I wouldn't buy a bike that's already on more than 50k.

Last bike I bought was on 33k and it's now on 48k. I have no qualms about that at all.

My mum ran a mile from an SV650 with 30-odd k on it. My Dad sees it as he can afford not to have a bike with a million miles on it, so why settle for one that does.

I tend to agree, I can't afford that luxury, hence I'm closer to 90k than I am to 0.

Depends entirely on the bike, and a lot on the "era" of the bike inquestion. 30k miles on most '80's bikes would see them royally shagged. There are exceptions of course put 30k on a efe and it will still be going strong.
Improvement in modern materials, lubricants and expectations means that 30k on most bikes nowadays is nothing at all. Many bikes won't even need the valves shimming at 30K and will still have excellent leakdown results at 50-100k miles. Nikasil-plated barrels will still be showing the honing cross-hatching after many years of hard use, such is the hardness of the coating.

i have nearly 22k miles on my 2004 GSXR 600. At the moment i'm looking to trade it in for a new K6 GSXR 1000. unfortunatly the dealer said they would only give me £2800 for it so i'll need to sell it myself as their would be no chance of me letting it go at that price

My ZZR just topped 16k so needs the valves checking etc.... I've put 3k on it in about 9 months. The Divvy had 27k on it and I traded it in with 36k about a year later...
