Hey There

I bought this Gilera Dna 50 (2003, 2500miles on clock) about 2 months ago and after the first month there was a problem. Its seems theres no spark in the plug (tried earthing it, nothing) and when I go to start it (does turn over), the petrol light and oil light both come on (theres full tank of petrol and oils full) I tried changing the spark plug, cap, hd leads, cdi unit but nothing :S Im quickly running out of ideas, already costing me enough trying to run it with insurance nevermind the parts! coming up to my exams and i have no transport Sad. Any Ideas or Suggestions will be greatly thank'd!

Thanks Kris Thumbs Up

Check the circuits for the lights... Did you actually change sparkplug? And nothing happens?

Take the airbox off, you'll see the carb. Right on the bottom of the Carb, you will see a screw. Unscrew this and petrol thats been in the carb will drain out onto the floor, wait until it doesnt come out anymore then tighten it back up, but not too much as you'll crack the float bowl.

Then take the sparkplug out, replace it with a brand new one.

Then put keys in ignition switch to on position and start kicking the kickstart lever down. Keep kicking it down, and after a few minutes it should start.

Hope that helps, Had same problem with a scooter before.

Is there power going into the CDI unit? Get a cheap multimeter (£5 from Maplins) and start poking and prodding - I think you've got a bad connection somewhere.

If you're located anywhere near Blackburn I could come and take a look - I generally know electrical stuff...

Chances are its stator failure... as its very common on all the piaggio 50cc models.

Its what makes the electricity needed to create the spark, the battery is only there for accessory devices ie starter, indicators etc... The starter provides main power for ignition and headlights, thats why your lights get brighter when the bikes rpm increases Wink

RH side of the engine, youll see the plastic cover with FAKE nuts on it, its behind there, and its multiplug is just in front if it near the waterpump pipe.

The only other thing which can cause spark issues on a DNA is water in the speedo unit, as the speedo is supplied with a direct feed from the CDI unit, if the speedo gets wet and shorts out, it grounds the CDI to earth and no spark... its simple to check, just unplug the speedo and see it it starts! Wink

But my moneys on stator! Cool

Yeah looks like it... you can try taking the clocks apart, and leaving the electrical board in a warm place (airing cupboard etc) for a couple of days, then refit it and see how it goes. Wink

Yeah they have a bad reputation for not being water tight ,condensation under the glass ect .best to keep them under cover and if you must ride it in the rain take an umbrella Smile

A little drop of silicone under the buttons and a packet of silica gel under the circuit board and they never play up again.... Wink

Did anyone else have this problem?
I have a Gilera dna 50 which has had mods and it is playing up. It has just had a new stator and ignition coil put onto it as well as a new HT lead and spark plugs. The bike run fine for a few hours and then just stopped and then there was no spark. I was riding it in the rain when it happened. The bike would just loose all power and the rev counter would be all over the place when the engine would run... It was like a ghost rev counter
