Hi, picked up an eBay bargain Supercity 125, 1994, 6000kms, de restricted, new pistons and rings, runs lovely - small problem..... front fork seals are shot, not a little but a lot! Oh and the MOT is due in under a month!

Having done the usual eBaying and Googling with no success apart from to find 1999/2000 Supercity seals or 1994 Mito seals, can anyone out there suggest a place I can look or advise as to which others would fit please?

Also read somewhere that if the seals are gone chances are the bushings could probably do with replacing - is this true?

Is this something to attempt myself or am I best booking it in to have it done somewhere?

Bushes are usually advisable to do with the new seals

Basically the seals are more likely to last longer, the little dears

Also make sure you clean the stantcions before installing the seals, etc

To be honest with you, you are probably best off taking the forks off and taking them to a garage and let them worry about it, it can be a right ballache.

Thanks for that, will get it down to a local workshop asap.

As this is my main commuting machine (apart from pedal power!) how safe would it be to ride as is? And what risk am I taking by riding it? (Should it be alright to take down to the garage?)

So apart from the fact it will fail the MOT in a month, it's not really serious? Great, bring on the sunshine and dry roads!!

When you're doing your MOT lift the dust caps off of the fork seals and push cotton wool/tissue paper down and then replace the dust caps

But get it fixed properly as soon as you can

It'll make the front end bouncy and affect the handling. You can ride like that but it's a lot better when they're fixed. Keep an eye on the oil getting on the brakes and the tyre.

yoour bike will wheelie really easy with no oil in the forks, you can get seals from mme in london e1 there about 13 pounds..is easy to do yourself and i had a shop try before and they bodged it completely...i had to show them how to put oil down the stanchion before you refit it. i changed my seals 3 times and really if there leaking you can guarantee you have scores down the stanchions which youll need to fill with some very liquid chemical metal the wet and dry it til its level with the chrome...feel around the stanchion with your finger nail for grooves before you take them apart. get them rechromed ir do the chemical metal thing.

If you can buy genuine seals and bushes, but I'm an advocate of genuine parts anyway.

You want OE fork seals from MitoMondo or Threecross motorcyles.

The pattern ones are the wrong size. They're about 0.5mm off.

No need for new bushes. You'll need some new fork oil, best to go up 2.5W to help reduce future leakages.

Jack the front of the bike up, remove wheel, remove caliper, remove mudguard.

Remove bars, remove allen bolt under bars, push up stanchion to pop out collar. Withdraw stanchinon from slider. Drain oil from stanchion. Remove slider from yokes. Remove dust seal. Remove C cilip from inside of slider. Clean area. Press in new seal. Replace C clip. Lube. Replace dust seal. Put slider back in yokes. Fill stanchion with oil up to the hole. Place stanchion in slider. Add a BIT of oil for luck. Replace collars. Replace top bolt.

Repeat with other leg. Only one leg is sprung.

Job sorted. I'm in Aylesbury if you want to pay for assistance. Thumbs Up

Hi

I would not advise riding with blown fork seals. Handling will become unstable at times. Possibly most dangerous is the oil covering the brake disk and destroying most of the braking power. Also running with blown seals for a while will eventually result in no oil, and soon afterwards trashed fork bushes.

Suspect they could do you for various things, just chose not to.

All the best

OE part number is CA800037977 @~£12/ea.

Use 10W fork oil, instead of OE spec 7.5W.

It's an easy job on the grand scale of things. Hardest part is removing the C clip that holds the seals in. You need a scribe or fine punch to hook it out.

Even if you can't split the forks, getting the legs out and dropping them off at a local place will save you ££.

Just don't scrimp on the seals. As said. pattern ones are too small and leak within weeks.

Thanks for everyone's help on this one - have sourced seals Very Happy (as well as throttle cable and brake pads which I have since discovered need replacing! Crying or Very sad ) from Mito Mondo, not the cheapest but genuine parts. Wink

Going to have a go at the job this weekend with a mate who seems to know what he's doing Rolling Eyes

Special thanks to K who helped make all this possible!

I'll let you know how I get on.

It's not fine to ride with defective fork seals.

It's 3 points and a £60 fine for each blown seal just as it is for blown shock absorbers on a car. Also if the fork oil has reached the front brakes you can also be charged with defective brakes not to mention the danger of oil on the bakes and the front tyre.

Generally in London a prohibition notice will be put on a bike for defective seals, it really is that serious.

Absolute rubbish.

Considering there are many pattern seal suppliers who supply seals of different qualities and seals come in many different sizes you are talking crap.

How can you decide without even looking at the fork legs that they don't need bushes?

Why add thicker fork oil and alter the damping rate when you can just service the forks properly?
