Just wondering if anyone has a problem like me, I find my headlights on dipped beam are crap in my car. (Most of my bikes had this problem too)

And just wondering if there is any cheap ways of getting better lights?

I notice there are uprated bulbs like H4 +30's or are these just a gimmick?

Most uprated bulbs are gimmicks...

Your best bet is to upgrade to HID but you're looking at £150-£200 + for a half decent kit.. check ebay for kits to suit your car (depending on what car you have)...

I doubt it?? as HID is standard on a lot of high end cars.... doubt they'd make it illegal now??

Have a look here.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=131146

To the best of my knowledge HID conversions are illegal and can fail an MOT due to the pattern. The kit needs to be CE or E marked and I think the light housing should be approved for use with HID bulbs. The lights should also be self levelling and I seem to remember that the car should have lense washers.

If you fit them and get an MOT then your laughing.

HID themselves aren't illegal, the conversion kits are for older headlights.

Aftermarket HID headlamps

In the Department's view it is not legal to sell or use after market HID lighting kits, for converting conventional Halogen headlamps to HID Xenon. If a customer wants to convert his vehicle to Xenon HID he must purchase completely new Xenon HID headlamps. The reason for this is that the existing lens and reflector are designed around a Halogen filament bulb, working to very precise tolerances. If one places a HID "burner" (bulb) in the headlamp, the beam pattern will not be correct, there will be glare in some places and not enough light in other places within the beam pattern.

The following is the legal rationale:

The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 regulate the situation in the UK.
Under these Regulations, HID/Gas Discharge/Xenon headlamps are not mentioned and therefore they are not permitted according to the strict letter of the law.

However new vehicles have HID headlamps. This is because they comply to European type approval Regulations. The UK cannot refuse to register a vehicle with a European type approval. These are to ECE Regulation 98 (for the HID headlamps which are tested on a rig in a laboratory) and ECE Regulation 48 (Lighting Installation on the vehicle).

For the after market, a used vehicle cannot obtain type approval because it is only applicable for new vehicles. However we feel that saying "HID is banned in the after market" would not be reasonable. Instead we should make analogies with new vehicles. It would be reasonable to require HID in the after market to meet the same safety standards as on new vehicles. The same level of safety should apply.

Therefore a HID headlamp unit sold in the after market should:

1. be type approved to ECE Regulation 98 as a component.

2. when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be complied with (although no government inspection will take place).

3. Comply with RVLR as far as "use" is concerned.
In practice this means:

1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory.

2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal.

In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.

As far as I know there is nothing stopping you fitting additional 'driving lights'.

Or here's a cheap one. Have you tried wearing those yellow tinted glasses? Those things freak me out every time I wear them, how the hell can putting tinted glasses on let you see in the dark?

My Volvo dipped beam was toss when I got the car, the bulbs are H7s rather than H4.

It had some blue "Xenon" bulbs in, so I took them out and put some bog standard Tesla Halogens in, no fancy +30% or ultra white xenon halogen HID intensity bollocks, beam was twice as good afterwards.

As for mattsprat, rewiring your lights, I cannot imagine how that could possibly alter the power of the bulbs, unless you wired in the low beam into the high beam terminals on the bulbs.... or you're low beam wiring was horrendously corroded and not getting enough current through so you rewired it...

Sounds daft but have you tried raising the aim of the headlights? Most cars nowadays have very poor aim and are either way up in the air or illuminating a couple of foot in front of the car.

when i fitted my power Xteremes onto the bike, i had to readjust my beam to make it lower. I guess my bike has decent enough reflectors and extra output from the bulbs might have startled some people.

The aim was checked by a mechanic and its just on the edge of being legal so it wasn't that!!

My new bulbs arrived today and there in and I can say is wow!
There not a gimmick, I'd say there about 5x brighter than they were. And the light it a nice white colour!

And they make the car look better too, and I even got free tinted sidelight bulbs!

Powerbulbs are highly recommended.

Most of the upgrade bulbs are called xenon, filled with a xenon gas mix. These can be had from about £12 a pair. Did you mean something different?

https://www.autobulbsonline.co.uk/#Anchor_Osram_Silverstar

H4 Silverstars are £13

The H7 cool blue are £19 and the blue vision are £21, a good bit cheaper than the other place.

It's where I got my nightbreakers from, couldn't find them cheaper anywhere else and they delivered next day although they've gone up a fair bit, mine were only £20.50 delivered last month!

These are Xenon bulbs that I got. They seem to be alot brighter and make the car look better too as the light is whiter.

Wish I'd have seen that Autobulbs site before cos they're £5 cheaper than PowerBulbs, but I did free tinted sidelight bulbs so its not all bad!
