 |
|
Yesterday I managed to snap the chain on my XJ600 (*slaps self*) and the chain seems to have taken the washer thing that goes on between the nut and front sporcket to stop the sprocket from coming loose with it.
Is it super mega dangerous to ride the bike without this washer in place or will I be ok? Is it possible to make one out of an old washer and bend it over the nut?
I'm off to the bike shop to get a new chain in 5 mins so I'll ask if they have a washer while I'm there but if not I feel I may hve to be a bit creative as I need my bike almost everyday for work but luckily I have a day off today.
(this is the washer I'm talking about (this is not my bike, just a random image from the net), you have to fold it over the nut that holds the sprocket in place)

The last thing I want to happen is have the sprocket come off!
Right, so don't ride it without one? Will I be ok to make one from an old washer if the bike shop doesn't have one? (I somehow doubt it's the kind of thing people usually stock) ____________________ Now: '00 Kawasaki ZRX1100R - Past: '84 Yamaha DT125, '89 Kawasaki KLR600, '97 Yamaha XJ600N

Crisis/death semi averted!
The bike shop (Woods in Abergele) had one of the washers in stock and it cost me £1.38!
But upon returning home to fit my new chain and washer I noticed a tooth missing from the front sprocket so I'm going to have to go back there tomorrow for some sprockets now Christ knows where the money is going to come from! ____________________ Now: '00 Kawasaki ZRX1100R - Past: '84 Yamaha DT125, '89 Kawasaki KLR600, '97 Yamaha XJ600N

A front sprocket should cost less than a tenner. since they wear much faster than a rear sprocket you should be able to just change the front. Check the condition of the rear sprocket - if the teeth show no signs of wear/hooking then there's no reason to change it. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Should be fitting new sprockets with a new chain anyway. It would only wear the chain out faster if you didn't. ____________________ Andy Sez....

It's advisable for best fit but not a necessity, especially if your chain was well inside it's stretch limit when you changed it. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Most likely reason is that the last person didn't realise it was a lock washer and didn't replace it. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
