Hi my bike (cbr600fx) has just developed a knocking noise sounds similar to a chain slipping round a sprocket and doesnt have a set timing pattern but is a lot worse when bike is on centre stand , in any gear ticking over i just bought a whole new chain and sprocket set thinking it was the worn front sprocket and chain but its still there ! could anyone help me with what it could be ?

it sounds like something's wrong with the clutch. Does the sound change when you pull the lever in?

Could be wrong though.

It started just as a very intermittent knock at different points when i was riding then it started doing it a lot at slow speeds (pulling away up to 30mph was the worst) no matter what gear im in at all times i.e. it would just make single knock sound now and again when i was powering up , down , changing gear , braking and holding a steady engine speed that was when it wasnt so bad i dont fancy trying to test it at the moment as i dont want to reck it !

Could it be a cam chain knock? That year of CBR is known to have iffy cam chain tensioners, and the cam chain slapping against the engine cases might make a similar sound...

That sounds to me exactly like the chain is hitting something. I'd check the chain tension, wheel alignment, remove the chain guard, and, as you say it's worse on the stand, look to see that the wee nylon slipper is in place where the chain runs over the top of the swingarm.

Sounds like the cam chain tensioner, I have a 2000 FY and it's a common issue.
It won't do any harm but can be annoying.

Here's a detailed description on how to fix it yourself.
https://www.bossturbo.com/cbr/howto_cct.shtml

Some people have been know to change them and it goes again only a few '000 miles later.

The only real way to stop it is to fit a manual one. I couldn't be arsed with that.

It sounds like its from the gearbox though and if you watch the rear wheel running in gear when it knocks the back wheel jerks as if there were teeth missing on a gear somewhere but the revs dont die and theres no major sound from the front of the engine but this has only happened over about 80miles it was fine before then while i was on a ride it just got progressively worse now it does it constantly like in the video i posted, its just such a pain it happened before im meant to be going away to a few places for x-mas Sad

I was having a look in the haynes and could the drive shaft bearing be shot seeing as it does it in all gears and gets a bit faster through the gears even though the revs are the same ?

Sorry to keep adding things a bit at a time but i just ran it again and the sound seems to go if i drag the rear brake which again makes me think maybe the rear drive bearing ?

Thank's Sam

Nooooo. If you drag the rear brake this puts tension on the chain in a different way to drive.

Therefore it could be the chain slapping on the swinging arm...

Oh, BTW, try the old screwdriver to the ear test, place it on the clutch cover & near the front sprocket somewhere solid.

Yeah i actually have a proper engine stethoscope so i'll try it over the weekend just such a pain i have taken off the front cover and hugger so i can see everything now but nothing is catching but the top end tapping is getting slighty louder unless im just paranoid now.

Thats what i thought but i striped it down (took sprocket cover and hugger off) and i cant see anything it can hit i also tightened the chain up a fair bit (just while it was on the centre stand without suspension compression) and it still does it Sad

It is yor chain, my bikes do it, it hits the swingarm when it wobbles. my cbr had the camchain thing, that was a lot quieter. If it does it while your riding, your chains not adjusted properly.

Looks to me like you're idling the bike with it on the stand and in gear. Sounds like back-lash in the gears because your idle is so rough. Balance your carbs and it will go away. I would stop doing it in any case before you damage the gearbox.

Ride the bike on the road under gentle power and I bet you don't hea anything. If you do, your chain it too tight or you have a knackered bearing in your rear wheel/sprocket carrier.

Does it still knock when the wheel isnt moving? could be bearings in the rear wheel, but i'm probably way out with this suggestion. I hope you sort it out. Thumbs Up
